    Thanks Kevin,

We need another holiday already, seems an age ago. Peeling skin though and that after using factor 50. I suppose that’s what you get for being a modelling shed hermit most of the year. :D

Been to several shows each weekend since holiday, so bit stop start wi this build. When I get a few hours they are fun sculpting in putty, so that keeps me happy.

As I progress with this build I will be adding bits of detail, I need to rough the shields up a bit as they would have been in battle, I have a couple of nice designs planned just hope I can pull them off.

    Regards, M.

    Cheers Steve,

You sound like my young cousin who keeps asking why I keep sculpting the Hulk, he’s not green he’s just a bit under the weather. :D

    Happy days,

    Regards,

Bit more modelling of the current figure scene in a mix of Greenstuff and Apoxie putty.

Replaced the sandle’d feet of the Miniart converted figure with bare feet, a common feature for the 5th century warriors. Also dented and marked the shield, doing this before adding the final design. Will Polish the dents with wire wool to depict indents rather than scraps but need the Tamiya thin used to smooth to cure overnight. The Hoplite shield was constructed in wood, into a bowl shape then covered in thin sheet of Bronze just 0.5mm thick, so in battle would get damaged very quickly, from blunt force and pointed weapons.

My scene depicts an end of a battle scene, where the defeated is at the point of life or death; what will the Spartan choose.

About finished modelling the current scene, with a simple rock and gravel based setting to not detract to much from the two fighting figures.
Have weathered the helmets and shields to depict a heavy battle that I hope will add to the final painted look. Also adding rope out of copper wire to the Spartan shield and ties on the plated armour of the Fallen Hoplite who’s life is in the balance.

    Hi Marcus

Thought you might have at least some of those books ...rather good reference as you say !

Nice wirework on the figures and battle damage .....going to look good painted

Good idea to keep the actual base fairly simple

Out of interest what ref have you used for the bell shaped cuirass ....perhaps a little too wide at the bottom ?

    Look forward to seeing more

    Happy benchtime

    Thanks Nap,

I have the Armies of Ancient Greece book, used several others for reference. Agreed that the bell Cuirass is a little exaggerated but seen reference (first image, 6) to them being wider, and I like it.

Just realised I’ve forgot to add the hinge strap to the side, so will add that.

Managed some time for painting today, working on the Athenian Hoplite and his Owl motif shield. Still a way to go but happy with him so far.

All the painting and designs are freehand, using various historical and reenactor references.

    Thanks Nap,

With such a wide choice of Shield designs it was difficult to choose, so in the end I went with ones that I liked. The owl reminds me of Jason & the Argonauts and knowing it’s linked with Athens gives the Hoplite an identity different to the Spartan. I’m working on the second shield at the moment depicting a mythical fish.

Loving the shields, big enough to actually see what I’m doing and a nice canvas to work on for the designs.
