Incidentally, he has not grown old - and that was not because of the evil enemy! Skobelew died on July 7, 1882 in a Moscow brothel at the age of only 38 of heart failure.

    Great references there from Martin

Perhaps we might see a breakdown on the actual medals ?

    Hope I see this one

And the golden belt across his chest means:

Thank you Piere for solving the puzzle!

Then it is REALLY the Mecklenburg-Schwerin War Merit Cross! I added it above.

(I had searched half of the Balkans for the "birdie" because the wrong shape and color had misled me ...)

I still hope that somebody will sculpt a bust of the "fat Orlow"!

Prince Vladimir Nikolajewitsch Orlow (* December 31, 1868 in Brussels, Belgium, † August 29, 1927 in Paris, France), a descendant of the famous Orlow brothers who supported Catherine II in their coup, was extremely rich and a close friend of the Tsar Nikolaj II. And otherwise a very interesting person:

He owned the first automobile in the Russian Empire, a Delauney-Belville, which he drove himself (and often chauffeured the tsar as well)...

and founded a famous horse breed (the Orlov trotters), that still exist today (near the city of Woronesh...

He designed a chain drive for cars himself, tested it himself and then had one of his authors rebuild a Rolls Royce...:

Best with a fur hat, as in thefollowing pictures!

And if my brushwork is enough: I would do the boxart for free ...

Great stuff!!(y) That Rolls has a track system very similar to that tested on Austin armoured cars in Russian service. It was apparently quite successful.
I think Skobelev is on my want list (and Orlov too, if he appears)

Martin - what is the gorget the Tsar is wearing in the above photo?

If I may be of any help, it is the Nicolas II's general officer's gorget for the Life Guards Preobrazhensky Regiment. It is in the collection of the State Historical Museum in Moskou, the
    Государственный исторический музей.

I'm sure Martin will add some interesting anecdote to that!
