I'm just beginning work on Capt. Aubrey and decided to begin with his hat. I don't want his hat to appear like a big, black block (don't you just love alliteration?) sitting on his head. So.

I painted the trim with pure black. The cloth elements are painted with a 50/50 mix of black and strong ochre, finished up with 10 coats of diluted sienna ink (approx 10:1 water to ink) and finally dark grey applied sparingly with a small piece of sponge. But I'm still not sure it doesn't look like a big, black block.

Comments, suggestions and constructive criticism are invited. Thanks

    Rick

No, it does not Rick. It looks good. More than good. I would only say that perhaps, depending on the finished piece, you could add a bit more of the dark grey (maybe towards a bit lighter) sparingly, to add a bit of depth.

Either you did a absolutely perfect job or your light setup is a bit stark for the picture, with the reflection making it hard to see everything properly imo

Thanks, Lucas. I hadn't thought of that. Good observation.

Those pis were taken on my work bench which, for obvious reasons, is very brightly lit. So I thought I'd take a couple of pics under normal room light to see which is the case. I'd prefer the former... but wouldn't be a bit surprised if it's the latter (lol). These pics were taken in my kitchen with no special lighting.

Just wanted to let you all know that the good Captain is going to go on hiatus. There are some significant casting problems with his face which prevent it from being painted smoothly (lots of pits and a few divots). I'm trying to contact Young Miniatures now to see if I can purchase the head only. Thanks to all for your interest and suggestions.
