Hi mate, yeah very similar to those pair of pistols. They are a very distinctive shape something that those that know would recognise so worth the effort in making.

Started putty work on the figures, it’s a small start as been really busy on the work front last couple of weeks. The two I’m working on will be Barrels 4th foot Govt soldiers.

Made some good progress this weekend, lots of details made. Re-sculpting using greenstuff/Apoxie putty mix.

Swords and hangers made for government soldiers, doing undergarments, leggings, shoes and gaiters. The Tricorn hats need a little work but look okay for now. Lots of details will be refined as I progress.

As a little aside, but very relevant, there is a Georgian building in Stone, Staffs, where I grew up, called Cumberland House. It has been a doctor's surgery for as long as I can remember, but, the Duke of Cumberland used the house on his way up to Scotland in 1745/6. Stone was then a coaching town and was situated on the main route North, in those days. His entourage used the Crown Hotel a little further up the High Street as it had stables and the many pubs that used to be in the town. (when I was at high School in the 70s, I used to walk past 22 pubs on the way to and from school) There were also two breweries in what was a very small town!!(y)

Nice anecdote, it seems that whilst most armies March on their stomach, the British treat it as a potential pub crawl. :D

Your conversion skills are first class. My only comment would be that the 4th Foot should be posed as in the painting. It was that technique which resulted in the Jacobites' defeat.

    Good luck,

Cheers Mike, using a bit of artistic licence for drama in the scene. I’m aware of the thrusting to the man to the right as the bayonet technique deployed by Government forces at Culloden. Adding a bit of drama to the scene as the wife’s family are Scottish, and well the Highland charge did make an impact on the 4th foot so showing a bit of disarray in the front line could have happened before the line was secured and the Jacobites held back.

Working on one of Barrel’s 4th foot government soldier and one of the Jacobites. It’s a common myth that all the highlanders wore kilts or plaid in battle, there was a mix of class, age and wealth that fought side by side.

Need to refine and fix some of the putty work, much detailing yet to add for each figure but you can see the basic shape of each now.

Sculpting using a combination of Greenstuff and Apoxie putty.

Great work so far, love the the Govt bod (y)

Good decision ref the Jacobite (a Lowlander?) wearing breeks* rather than a plaid, tho' they do look a bit like plus fours... put a 9 iron in his hand and he could be straight off the links ;)

Seems to be a bedroll over his shoulder? (ie not a sort of fly plaid)

*as opposed to the Highlanders' tartan, almost skin tight, trews

    Thanks Neil,

Always a danger of copying what reenactors do but took the idea for the look from the following as liked the simplicity.

After Culloden I bet many of the Jacobites wished they were on a links course shooting the breeze at the 19th hole.

Doing one of the Jacobites in skinny trews.

and guy at the back in plaid for the more traditional look.

No bother (and yes, watch out for re-enactors), but even so, his breeks do appear much less full at the knees (and his plaid is folded rather than rolled?).

Also a bit more detailing on the Govt soldier.
