    Dear Planeteers,

here are some pictures of my current project, a Prussian hussar from about 1757. It is a rather small bust from Young Miniatures (1:10 scale or smaller) but it is large in drama and action.

A few month ago, I finished another Prussian hussar from the war of 1870/71. Although both gentlemen are separated by more than 100 years, the uniforms share some remarkable similarities.

Frederick the Great formed the Husaren-Regiment Nr. 5 (von Ruesch), a Hussar regiment commanded by Colonel von Ruesch. These Hussars adopted a black uniform with a Totenkopf emblazoned on the front of their mirlitons and wore it on the field in the War of Austrian Succession and in the Seven Years' War.

In 1808, when the regiment was reformed into Leib-Husaren Regiments Nr.1 and Nr.2, the Totenkopf remained a part of the uniform as you can see on the second bust.

    Happy painting!

I love what you've done so far, Sven. The face and mirliton are extremely realistic. One small thing, though: the skull and bones were stitched in white thread on these caps. The white metal versions came much, much later...
Looking forward to the next steps.

    Cheers

In Sven's defense, it looks like that was a choice made by the sculptor. That is, it looks like it's molded as a metal badge.

    Prost!

Nice work on both. One question, I have recently acquired a copy of that second bust; is the totenkopf sculpted on or did you sculpt that?

    Hi Karl,
You are absolutely right. The Totenkopf was stitched and not made from metal. The cast, however, does not leave much options. I was thinking of removing the skull and create something myself but I think I will live with it, lazy as I am.
    Thanks for responding.

    Hi Wayne,
my copy was sitting on the bench for more than two years. Once I have started with it, however, I am really enjoying it. There is a lot of black to paint and I think this is a nice challenge.

The 1870 bust is Stormtroopers. I am working on it now - great sculpt and minimal clean up on the casting. Hoping to get primer on it soon.
