Lovely idea. You could give the lad a drum and make him a boy drummer. It's worth noting that in Victorian England the RN was held in very high esteem, so lots of boys, including Queen Victoria's sons and grandsons wore sailor outfits.

What a nice piece! A young lad aspiring to be a soldier like his father. One would guess the boy would grow up to see service in the late 19th Century (India, Sudan, Boer War) and maybe encourage a son of his own to join up. The army runs in families as we all know.
