Thank you, I read that 1st century legions had a mix of Scutum with the curved shield not standard until the 2nd century. This gives the scene some geometric variance and visual interest for the viewer.

Can only agree with these comments .....great facial expressions as you say takes the figures to another level ...particularly well chosen is the one on the ground

    Thanks for updates

Thank you mate, after the disappointment of the MAIM heads being to small and lacking in detail, these head replacements by Reedees are perfect in look and scale and come as a huge relief after thinking I was going to have to sculpt each figure head from scratch.

Making some small details today, I’m not including Iceni warriors in the scene but hinting at them in the battle with sword, helmet, spear and shield.

    Hi Marcus

Great update , the helmets look good , how did you do the shield ?

I see where your coming from with the Iceni arm ..but perhaps think about moving the compsition back more ( looks a little empty ) and add a angled upper torso with the arm

    Just my thoughts !

    Happy benchtime

Following this with interest (and awe) (y)

Just wondering what you're doing with the bloke who's lost his helmet?

When I was researching my (newly acquired) fig I came across this arming cap which may be an authentic and interesting alternative to shaven/cropped hair?

Agree with Nap re:the disembodied arm. Either adding more of the body to show that its not amputated, or moving it to show that it is, would be preferable I think. Truthfully I think the composition is better without it. Obviously they are all facing the unseen enemy and there's plenty of abandoned equipment and weaponry to show who that enemy is. Love all the details you are adding. The staff replacing the pilum is an excellent idea.

That is great conversion work and a fascinating subject. I've been following you build with great interest and I think this will be a very impressive vignette when your finished with it.

Really nice progress with it Marcus, nice detailed and clean work on the accessories that you have made, all add a nice interest to the scene and tell the story.

Very nicely animated, and certainly a spirited diorama. The Optio's crest holder should be on top of the helmet, not set back, and the front ring should be a little further forward as well. Not as easy to do on an Imperial Gallic as opposed to the Imperial Italic helmet which the legionaries are wearing..

Thanks for sharing this detail, I might add it. Wanted to model hair for the guy on the floor and will be doing him with a couple of cuts, so don’t want anything to distract that story. Really appreciate the thought and nice historical detail. Appreciated. :)

Agree with you and Nap. I’m starting to model an Iceni warrior for the ground but if he doesn’t work I won’t include him, I like the current composition as well, the viewer becomes the imaginary enemy which makes for a strong visual.

Thanks Mike, the Tesserarius helmet is based on this one. Obviously a replica, but I like it.

Started to put an Iceni warrior figure together rather than a floating arm front of the scene, will see how he looks but might leave him out and just go with the battle debris idea, hinting at the enemy and battle taking place.

Hi mate, I’m doing an Iceni figure but will probably leave him out as like the current scene.

The shield is just cut Styrene sheet, shaped based on images of the same, the boss is styrene sheet heated over a tea light then stretched over a replica bullet I have, they are great for different dome shapes.

The reverse is freehand would grain done with craft knife then lightly sanded.

I think that we are all enjoying this lesson in conversion/scratch building as you progress though this scene and the snags that have come along to cause the changes of plan and how you rattle of Shields, weapons etc to adjust accordingly, the pictures hold a wealth of information showing how its all done, a great SBS.
