I'm working on another Master Box Kit and I thought I'd do it as a WIP.

Called "Wounded Brother", it consists of a trio of Mohawk Indians retreating from a battle during the French and Indian war in, or about, 1754.

It's one of the newer kits and the sculpting is first rate.

In my prefered fashion, I assembled the three figures as far as possible before painting. I try to avoid painting pieces of the kit separately and assembling afterwards as much as possible, especially with plastic kits. The two main figures are approximately 15 pieces each with the wounded only containing 8 or so.

As most of you know, with plastic injection molding limitations, detail can be somewhat soft due to the lack of undercuts. The number of separate pieces is a method of overcoming this. So, once I have the pieces cleaned and assembled, I go over the detail with files, scribers, and an exacto knife to sharpen up any detail I can. This is especially true for belting, etc.

Once this is done, I begin to add new detail usually in the area of cording, belting, and decorative items. It helps to have a large spares box. ;)

Just as an FYI, here is a photo of my workbench and the tools I use to assemble this kit.

Finally, here are the assembled figures, with my minor additions and enhanced detail, ready for undercoating and painting.

That said, I will probably work on the base and groundwork first, as is normal for me. That way I can avoid handling the painted figures while working on positioning them on the base.

Stay tuned and thanks for looking.

    Ken

This will be interesting. Was a big fan of Masterbox figures in my modelling days. They do some interesting and different figures of good quality mostly. Look forward to seeing this come together.

By the way, wish my work area was this tidy...... maybe if it was my painting would improve

Thanks Graham! Some of the latest releases are very good and some are so, so. I use some of the "so, so" for spare parts. ;)

As for the tidy workbench, I'm embarrassed to say, it's a staged photo. While I'm actually working on something it's not nearly that tidy.o_O

    Cheers

Looks like the figures have great detail after your prep. Will be nice to follow this project and see how it paints up.
Staged shot or not, I don't think I could achieve such a tidy looking bench.

    Hi Ken

Great project and must admit the figures look good as well ...are they easy to work with ? ...is there much prep ?

As always following the benchtime on these

    Look forward to the basework

As for the view of the bench ....don't we all work in such a tidy area.......Oh if only .....LOL

Those look rather nice Ken, I have the same set of burrs for exactly the same purpose. Darn handy. I've been meaning to pick up some of the MB Indian and Gunslingers series myself. Too many neat things being released these days...look forward to seeing what you do with these paint wise.

looks like a very nice start Ken, do you need pictures of the Quebec forests for your groundwork ? if yes : just ask :)

Thanks Nap! I find plastic easy to work with and, in general, easier to modify than metal or resin. However, they are much more time consuming. Just removing mould lines from 15 separate pieces per figure alone takes longer. Then getting all the pieces to fit can be a challenge. This kit's parts fit together very well however.

Actually, I very much enjoy building the figures and the prep work for plastic while for resin and metal I just want to get to painting.

Thanks Kimmo! The right tools make a difference! You are also right about so many neat things being released. It's hard to pick and choose and find the time to do everything I want. :)

This looks a very interesting set- I shall be following closely.
Nice work so far, and I like the idea of doing the groundwork before painting the figures- it makes so much sense but it would never have occurred to me.
And I will probably forget next time the opportunity arises ......

Thanks Franck! I am basing my groundwork loosely on the box art for this kit. I'll be posting progress later today. Your offer is appreciated. :)

Great start Ken and super prep work. Just received the Osprey Warrior book on Highlanders of the Seven Years War period in North America and it features quite a number of pictures by the artist Robert Griffing covering the native woodland Indian nations/warriors from this period. Some great artwork and reference material. Looking forward to seeing these painted up.

Off to a.good start Ken. I'll be following your progress. Be interested in seeing your ground work for this one. I tried your ground work pallette for Trooper Smith. Don't know if I got the mix proportions near to yours, but I was pleased with the results and will use it again.

Thanks Neal! I love Osprey's books, although I don't have that one. Working on the groundwork now and anxious to get into painting the figures. :)

This is going to be an interesting and informative thread Ken. I have done a few MB figures, mainly to go with vehicles. They are pretty good by and large.
I'm on this one for sure
