PS I have spoken to companies who are more than happy to support a Annual prize

PPS We will still have the Vignette & Diorama comp running twice yearly

that's some very good moves :) I like the fact that beginners will be awarded and then get motivation up for their next projects !

    Hi Guys

Quick thought ....do we need to be a little more specific what each catagory covers

Standard ....a modeller who does it for their own pleasure

Intermediate....a modeller who has increased their skills

Advanced......a modeller who takes Commisions and is a box artist

    THOUGHTS PLEASE

Do it self declared..to be honest I’d can the competitive thing and simply do a monthly draw from submissions...it’s going to be painful for voting as well and going forward how many will really take the time to scroll thru categories ..is going to be bulky mess

Certainly don't want to "can" it

This is about members participating and enjoying the forum

I know..but just asking if we are overthinking this and potentially burdening the process. Needs be easy and inviting to join in, and to vote...

What a great idea this can be Nap as rightly stated it gives lots more potential for varied levels to enter there Model without feeling possibly they are not good enough,
it will open up the stage for people like me that doubt there ability but strive to improve although depicting abilities is going to be a tough call.
Hey you never know I may even actually enter myself now.:)

    Hi everybody

Just to reconfirm the changes to the 3 catagories will happen wef January's FOTM with the Vignette and Diirama comps still continuing as before ( twice yearly with prizes )

Some good points raised by members below for information only

Any categorisation is going to be largely subjective its as much about not applying conditions to categories rather than applying them.

Hopefully we are all pretty well aware of our level with the vast majority would want to be judged against their ability

If during the competition year someone medals twice then they should be expected to move up from the next calendar year.

We should all be able to self regulate in how votes are cast

I think I know what I expect to see at every level and with these expectations in mind vote accordingly this requires members to think about their vote and not as was often the case vote for every entry.

Each member having a single vote in each category hopefully applies a bit of rigour to the process.

PLEASE DO SUPPORT FOTM in your chosen category

    Happy benchtime

First, I love the idea of splitting the competition into categories.

Second, I wonder if there's a way to make a self-assessment rubric for people who aren't sure what category they are in.

This might be way overthinking it, but as an example you could do something like this. Take certain skills like painting cloth, nmm, faces, and object source lighting (those are just arbitrary examples), and rate them 1, 2, or 3 with one being beginner and three being advanced.

So my painting might end up like this:
    Cloth - 3
    nmm - 1
    Faces - 2
    osl - 1

On average, I score a 1.75 which would put me close to the intermediate category.

It's still subjective and self-reported, and whatever skills you use in the rubric would be a bit arbitrary. That said, it would offer some clarity as to how to categorize yourself.

Of course, it also opens the doors to an unending philosophy discussion about what makes a piece good, but that one is well above my pay grade!

This is getting way beyond a friendly little thing..it’s awfully bulky as it stands...I get all the good intentions, but how many are really going to go thru all these hoops?

Completely a fair point. I would do it, but I works as a teacher. I love a good grading rubric!

As to the point, I wouldn't set it as a requirement. I think it could be a helpful but fully optional tool for those who aren't sure of their particular category.

I can see the argument for streamlining though. If the point is getting more participants, then a slimmed down approach is probably a better aim.

Am only thinking that professionals, including the box art painters and such I really would hope to stick to Putty&Paint_they get recognition with new announced offerings anyway...then dividing the rest of us: it’s likely self disciplinary - and as with completions based on self estimated performance outliers become evident over time and a friendly nudge to step up from Nap might be all that’s needed..someone self declaring as intermediate and not ready for the level simply won’t win...

might need WADA to do some random drug testing!..ha ha..sorry for being a bit of naysayer here..if I have a motive it’s to get those in their first year or so to show up as that’s when progress and confidence often is most marked..and to get more votes- I am guilty of not participating because I paint more game style fantasy that’s chalk and cheese to most on PF, and I find the voting process as it stands a painful scrolling exercise..I really only want one image per entry, one entry per person..

    Hi Guys

Thanks for comments ...I am not wanting to do any form of grading ...This is going to be kept simple!! ...Point 2 in the first post

Everything is set up ready ...of course it might take a bit to settle down

After reading the comments above I would agree with three categories, but also stated, (paraphrasing here), KISS, keep it simple, sweetheart. Once the bugs are worked out it should work fine. Friendly competition is always good. I think most of us are fond of the monthly contests, otherwise there wouldn't be so many entries. I see it as inspiration, not really a competition, and everyone appreciates recognition for a job well done every now and then.

In self evaluation I consider myself in the middle of the pack, more towards the intermediate category. But when saying that I'm comparing myself against the incredible work I see here on this site. Others might say I'm in the advanced category. I have been paid for my work before, but I do not do commission work or box art, just a few magazine articles. Self evaluation would put me in the advanced category, it's not my first rodeo, so to speak. I am nowhere near what I would consider a professional.

I see the incredible art done by others here as inspiration to improve my skills, it is highly motivating for me. IMHO, breaking this up into three categories, as also mentioned above, would be motivation to advance and improve. Heck, I can still remember as a kid being in awe of what people could do with a plastic model and some paint. I'll bet I'm not alone on this by any stretch of the imagination. Ask your wife, she knows you're still a kid!

Ruck On I say, Nap. Ruck On!

It seems like a great idea to separate the different levels of pictorial quality, a success.
