Great concept & depiction of Max Wunsche, Jeff. I'd be interested to know if the Heer officer in greatcoat talking to him has ever been ID'd?
Looks a bit like Guderian, but I'm probably wrong.

Hi Chris, There are 3 men with Wunsche, an SS officer, an Army office, and a senior Army Officer, possibly a General, but definitely not Guderian. I enlarged his photo. He has no mustache and is much older man. Jeff

Thanks for that Jeff, I appreciate your efforts - I wasn't 100% certain it was Guderian, but thanks for your confirmation.

    Chris.

The figure looks up to Jeff’s usual high standard. This one is now added to my ever growing list...

But I’m very curious about the Uniform in the picture. Looks a bit different from the standard camo. Can anyone advise? Don’t want to get it wrong!

    Chris,

The camouflage jacket worn by Wunsche in the photos is tailored from Italian camouflage-pattern cloth - large quantities of this material were taken from Italian depots by the Wehrmacht & Waffen-SS when Mussolini was deposed in 1943. After the Battle of Kursk in July 1943, the Leibstandarte was sent to Italy to refit & show solidarity with Mussolini.

The rolls of camouflage cloth were made up into combat jackets, trousers & overalls by unit tailors & issued to the troops in large quantities. Because the Hitlerjugend Division was raised from a Leibstandarte cadre of experienced veterans (of which Max Wunsche was one; he commanded the Panther battalion in SS-Panzerregiment 12), many photos of HJ troops wearing these Italian camo uniforms can be seen, or a mixture of Italian & W-SS camo.

    Hi Chris

Oh of course! Thanks for the detailed explanation. I knew about the Italian camouflage but hadn’t made the connection. Great to have so much knowledge at your fingertips, so to speak!
    Thanks again!

No problem at all, Chris - glad to be of help. As well as being seen in Normandy, a lot of those Italian camo uniforms remained in Italy (mostly being worn by Army & Fallschirmjager troops) & many found their way to Russia too - there are original examples of W-SS Kharkov parkas with rabbit fur lining in Italian camo material.

Also of interest re. SS-Panzerregiment 12, many photos of HJ tank crews in Normandy show them wearing the 2-piece leather U-Boat suits. Whilst the Leibstandarte was stationed in Italy, they commandeered a large quantity of leather protective clothing from Italian Navy depots, & it was this stock which was used to equip Leibstandarte & HJ tank crews.
