This is my finished heavy conversion project which portrays an officer of the Legion of Frontiersmen, Newfoundland in 1914 just as these men were being incorporated into the Newfoundland Regiment at the out break of the Great War. Thanks Steve. Off beat might be an understatement here. I would be floored if there is another figure of a Legion of Frontiersman member out there. Most people in Canada aren't aware the organization even existed, so I can't imagine folks outside of Canada would know about them.

I'm very happy to have brought some attention to the service of the people of Newfoundland. That area didn't become a province of Canada until 1949, so they were technically rendering service to the British Empire at that time. But their story is all the more interesting because of it. They served with the Anzac and British forces at Gallipoli. No other "Canadian" unit had that distinction. Their most famous, or infamous story comes on July 1, 1916 when as part of the assault battalions that took part on the first day of the Somme offensive, the Newfoundland regiment was effectively wiped out at Beaumont-Hamel, with only 68 men answering roll call out of an original contingent of over 800 officers and men. So in Newfoundland today, while the rest of Canada celebrates July 1 as Canada Day, Newfoundlanders also pause to reflect on the sacrifice paid by that small colony.

Excellent work and finish to this figure, this is the part of the hobby I love seeing the most. Great initial idea and completed to a high standard.
