WIP Bonaparte’s Saxons in Russia 1812

Working on the recent release from Bonaparte’s depicting two Saxon soldiers pulling a sledge during the retreat from Russia, 1812. It’s a great little scene and beautifully rendered by Alan Ball in 90mm. The figures depict a trumpeter from the Chevauleger Regiment Polenz and a member of the Gardes du Corps pulling a sledge contains assorted equipment and a cask of booty. For the uniforms I referred to Uniforms of Napoleon’s Russian Campaign by Philip Haythorthwaite/Mike Chappell and the Saxon Army 1810-1813 by Bunde/Gardner/Stein together with some assistance from members on the site. There was a bit of a query around the greatcoats and colours in so much as some references suggested the coats were white with collar in facing colour but there were also pictures depicting the cape part of the greatcoat in facing colour. I opted to go with the latter to add a bit of contrast to the white. I’m utilising the caat base that comes with the kit which incorporates some details such as abandoned personal equipment and a few rocks. Not sure yet what to use to depict the snow.

Thanks Bob. It’s a great little set and the detail is nice and crisp. It’s been really enjoyable trying to get that frozen look on the figures.

Thanks Mike. Bonaparte’s have quite a few tempting kits in their range and I like the fact that they feature some of the lesser represented nations.

Nearly slipped past me with this one Neal . . . .luckily I'm persistent so I'm following it now. Great start with it so far and I agree that the contrast helps with the cape. Also good to see some of the less well represented nations form this period popping up for a change as you say (y)
Done a couple of snow-scapes . First one was melting /thawing snow which I used caster sugar which clumps and dissolves together to give just the right effect (Probably not appropriate for this one though) On the recent 70mm Teutonic Knight I used Micro-balloons and a small amount of Andrea snow crystals for sparkle (which looks good IMO) For a heavy snowfall I'd look at some of this stuff - https://www.precisioniceandsnow.com/ I've never used it, but it looks promising

Look forward to the next installment

    Hi Neal

So that's why you were asking about their capes !

Thanks Paul, appreciate the comments and the pointers re suitable products re the snow. I’ve had a quick look on the forum and the internet and micro balloons get quite a few mentions. I’ve got some of the Andrea artificial snow (AAS-01) and used a little bit previously on a base. Initially it looked promising but as it dried out it lost a bit of lustre but that could be down to me and too much water/white glue and not enough of the snow.

Thanks Nap. There’s always some method in my madness but I’m just not sure what the method is yet

I was tempted when i saw this at SMW, but had just spent over £120 on some of their other amazing items. This is looking great, as for snow i can vouch for precision ice and snow, have used it a few times before and works a treat ( https://www.precisioniceandsnow.com/steve-brodie.html). I have a big bag of the stuff somewhere in the shed (gave it me as a promotional thing) , so if you want some send me a PM and i will send you a small bag of the stuff

Hi Steve. It’s a super kit and you won’t be disappointed when you do decide to take the plunge. Know the feeling when you’re wandering round a show, there are so many great figures to choose from. I like the fact that Bonapartes cover some of the smaller nations from the Napoleonic period which adds that extra level of interest. As for the snow, that’s a really great gesture and I’ll certainly take you up on your offer.

    Thanks
