Next up is a project I’ve been afraid to tackle for years. If you asked me what the greatest metal miniature of all time is, I’d have to vote for the Red Lancer kit from Poste Militaire. First released in the late 70s (I think) as a 90mm kit, it is incredibly heavy and amazingly detailed. I’ve had it in the stash for years, and even started it then put it down because I didn’t think I could do it justice. The time has finally come, before my eyes give out on me. Basic assembly is underway, and I made a cherry plinth for it. I had to drill out the rear leg and add a rod to help support the enormous weight of this beast. No big vignette base for this, the figure has more than enough detail by itself. Wish me luck!

Good luck with this Matt, looking forward to the updates. As you and others have said, these Poste Militaire kits were a real benchmark and still stand up to the best of today’s offerings. Great detail and sculpting and will surely be a great addition to your collection. Now, where’s the Bonaparte’s figure list....

Know what you mean about the fear of tackling a large project as I have had the Poste Militaire mounted samurai in my stash for years. Looking forward to following your journey with this project.

One of Ray Lamb's best...The wonderfully sculpted bridle/snaffle was, if I remember rightly, a separately cast
unit which had to be carefully moulded around the horse's head. A real treat to paint - lovely stuff....

I remember me,seeing the marvellous French Dragon on his horse, turning round in the saddle in the early 80´s (the sound from the Glasgow band Endgames with their phantastic song "Waiting for another chance" is in my ears, playing it all night long from my tape deck/self recorded from the Radio ) .
That was another world for us here in Germany with our flats. For the price of a 54 mm footsoldier you get 25 pieces 30mm flats….after a look in my wallet at that time,I closed my eyes and dreamed on.....;)

I've had this one in my stash for years as well, afraid to do it justice. I'll be following this build closely. Please post SBS pictures if you can.

I no longer have this in the stash but I do have the red lancer trumpeter kit along with the resin conversion kit to create a figure in true campaign dress. I'd agree the trooper kit is the very best figure ever released in possibly any medium. Released in September 1989.
Figures for me are like music, films, books etc. The very best trigger nostalgia and memories.

I have the mounted dragoon in my stash which I started but never finished many years because I my painting skills were not up to the challenge. I really should find the kit in my GGA and finish it. IMHO, this is the best Poste Militaire figure. Best of luck with your Lancer. I will be following your progress.

    Much later than I thought!

Turns out the reins are missing after all these years, or rather the two pieces of the rein that he holds. Easy enough to fabricate though. It looks like the instructions are actually wrong about the way the lower rein (attached to the snaffle?) fits on, they have it attaching to the bit. Wish I knew more about horse furniture! :). Lots of good reference around though.

The original kit contained detailed instructions for this one in the form of a mini booklet.
I still have it...should you need a scan, Matt, just shout.

I have them too Matt, if needed.

This is a monster of a kit. Although marketed as 90mm it's nearer 110mm easily. I hope you enjoy it Matt, it really is superb.

I keep mine in its box as I can never decide if I want to do the trooper or the trumpeter.
