A Tribute to a good friend

A few weeks ago I was reading through some pages of PM's I shared with my good friend Mark Pearson (aka Tubby-Nuts) and came across an idea for a project, one among several we discussed during his time on the forum.
With the introduction of the 'Roll of Honour' sub forum, and my posting Mark on there, it cemented an idea for a tribute piece for him in my mind. As I said in my post, one of his finest attributes was his sense of humour so, with this in mind, and using two of his favourite figures, that he sent to me some years back when his declining health prevented him from doing them, I decided there was no better way for me to honour his memory.

I have spent the past couple of weeks chatting with another good friend on here, thanks Del, and with his help and insight, have come up with an idea that, I hope, will show these figures in their best light. I think the scene will also reflect the humour in these pieces, which in turn would have given Mark a chuckle.

Originally conceived and sculpted by PF member 'Prickett', the scene will centre on two of his 'Dwarf Tombraider' series of figures and, as you will no doubt deduce from the pics, will have the working title of "How to train your Dragon".

Having sketched out a few ideas, and gathered a number of reference pics of elements I want to include in the scene, I went about collecting the needed materials. First off was a nice piece of 'English Yew', which I purchased from Richard at Oakwood Bases for a very reasonable price.

Then it was down to ordering some bits and pieces to enhance the story, some dwarf ruins from Scibor, and a grass mat from Scale Model Shop, along with a couple of bits from Mini Natur. Next up was a visit to the back garden for some old roots and stones and Ebay for a tub of filler. Fortunately I also have a lot of useful bits left over from other projects.

I have now reached the point where I can begin work on the scenic base for the project and, as with a lot of my pieces, I thought a fun SBS would be in order.

A little background on the scene I want to create. First off, and like so many others, space is at a premium in the cabinet. With this in mind, a lot of planning and measuring has taken place, with each of the elements needing to blend with the others in quite a small area of 8 inches square. One obvious way to maximise the available space, and the one I have chosen, is to have two levels, with a figure on each level. This will entail building the raised level with steps going up to it, and will have some ruins to accompany the figure holding the little Dragon. I have used the two wider/lower Scibor pieces to create the wall that will front the upper level, and will have steps going up between them. I cut the two pieces to better shape them for what I needed, then undercoated them in my usual fashion. Next up I drilled and pinned them to secure their position on the base, and glued a section of the grass mat for the basic groundwork on the lower level, then fixed the wall pieces.
I hope you will get a better idea of what I am talking about from the pics...

    Hi Ron,
Nice to see you doing another very fitting SBS, old Squirrel Nuts would have had a few choice dry comments to throw in on this thread. He'll be looking in from somewhere no doubt.
    cheers

Time for an update me thinks.....
Having acquired some foam insulating board...I have built up the basic shape and size for the upper level...with the central cut out being for the steps that will lead up into it...and this has been fixed to the main base.

    IMG_5220.JPG IMG_5221.JPG

Next I will 'render' the sides and back with filler to seal it and blend it into the whole ready for painting.

Whilst waiting for glue to dry I prepped a few of the chosen plants...the plants are aquarium (plastic) and were soaked in IPA to remove the coating they have...if you don't do this the paint won't adhere to them.

    IMG_5223.JPG IMG_5224.JPG

I also took the opportunity to prep a couple more pieces of ruins for the upper level...again these were undercoated in my usual way.
There are another two pieces of ruins I could use but...with space at a premium...I need to exercise a bit of restraint.

    IMG_5222.JPG

I am having to treble check the dimensions of all the bits and pieces...to make sure there is plenty of room for the dwarves to stand in amongst all the groundwork and extras.
