Hey Guys,

I am making a sci-fi subject for a change, Joaquin Palacio's amazing sculpting work as "The Juggernaut", a piece in 75mm by Black Sun Miniatures.

Added a few cables, and preset a scene using 1/24th scale accessories. I will also add a Teddy Bear on the gun to make things even more extreme .

Decided to add a layer of pre-shading this time, beneath my usual oils over acrylics technique, and it gave a subtle difference. Will explore that even further in future projects...



And base paint is applied (Abteilung 502 Oils Over Tamiya XF-15 Flat Flesh Acrylics), which gives me a very nice base to work contrasts, pumped up veins and bruises and blood.
One special aspect of this technique is that it brings it's own special sheen to the skin tones. It will be different from all other areas in the figure, since skin tones are my only technique involving oils. I really like and work hard to maintain each area's own sheen. I really don' like the trend of some acrylic painters that leaves an overall dead flat matt finish on their pieces. Takes away depth and contrast, such as the cartoonish "non metallic metal" approach, which looks cool but completely unrealistic. I always seek for a very natural and realistic finish, and not a lot of contrast, I like the shadows and highlights to be made almost entirely from the piece own curves and folds. With thee correct light source it will bring out the best in your subtle work.

Some of these photos are taken in my bench, with extreme light source and my phone camera can't cope with everything and it turns some photos to a more warm tint, so, it's not as vivid as it seems here, and as always with my projects, I will take professional photos in correct light source and camera when it's finished and post here.

So, Base skin tone :





Added bruised skin tones around the wounds and subtle vein design (all here made with ABT Oils) :





Now with metallics and full gore painted on :









Next Was the Cyborg arm, a pleasure to paint and go wild on weathering. Used Mission Models paints for base color, Vallejo Metal Color Acrylics for all metal areas, and VMS pigments and Binders form the weathering, along some sponge chipping with a dark brown color. Metal Shine on the edges is made with Uschi's amazing metallic pigments :



Today I will begin working the big (Huge) Gun and will post here.

Nice one Julian...good change of pace..are you using Ab 502 w VMS or the Ab mediums?

Thanks ! For the oils VMS Oil Expert (satin) as accelerator yes.

Indeed, I’ve compared and find the AB mediums less effective than VMS..I think VMS has cobalt driers..certainly less smelly! I’ve been using VMS or just odourless white spirits, but the VMS seems to mix best with AB..it’s good to see your work: many of us started with oils, over enamel...then acrylics...but now painters are trying all sorts of different techniques. Certainly oils give fast and easy blending vs acrylics and more forgiving of mistakes ..

Big Gun is 80% completed.
Went all the way on the weathering, fantasy subjects are great to practice new approaches.
There are endeless cabling yet to be painted, integrate them visually with the weathering, the leather cushion base, and the rear end.

It's my usual oils over acrylics technique, and a precision wash to define fingernails and other areas, if the sculpt allow us to do so...

Big gun is finallly done....crazy amount of cables. I thought this gun deserved a pink piggy toy.
Now it's looking "fofo" aggressive

Next is the final stretch of lower body, pants, boots and guess what ? more cables...a lot of them.

Thanks Bud, Fofo here in Brazil is "Fluffy", so Fluffy aggressive !

Using Scale Color Artist's Paint range for the first time. Very impressed....


This blue jeans have 2 hands of paint...you can't see any brush strokes, finish is a super delicate satin-matt result. Extreme coverage...really impressed, pigment heavy paint.
This is will be a full review of the Scale Color Paint range for the Michigan Toy Soldier Blog, later this month.

Loving Scale Color Paints...sooo smooth to work with. Easy blending and pigment density is off the chart.
A lot yet to do...Let me know what you think on the jeans approach. It's my first ever. Of course there is a lot of details to be added such as precision wash for the pocket lines, dirt, and so on...
