WIP Return from Dunkirk

Hi everyone, hope you are all well. I’ve been working on the recent new release from Sarnia Miniatures depicting three Tommies on their Return from Dunkirk. It’s a super set and a great idea from Peter to depict the three busts centred around the window on the door of a railway carriage bringing them back home. I’ve seen Peter’s thread re his version but after a dry fit of parts I decided to tackle it slightly differently and built up the three figures in situ before painting. The only reason for this was there was a small amount of filling needed in one or two places so I wanted to get that out of the way before adding any paint. I’ve also opted to use the helmet provided in the kit on the centre figure which required the removal of a portion of the top of the head for this to fit. Fortunately Peter provides an extra head in case of any mishaps. I’m considering adding a wound card on a piece of string to the figure with the eye injury just to add an extra point of interest- some of the reference pictures I’ve seen show soldiers with these attached. I’m representing the train as from the Southern Railway company with a green door and yellow/gold trim.

    Hi Neal

Great to see this being done and it's looking really good ...it's a cracking idea from Peter at Sarnia

Like the variety of colours you've got and I agree the tag would add interest

I like the helmet , would probably just put it at more of a angle but yours looks good

    Following this with interest

    Happy benchtime

I received my copy on Friday and immediately came to the same conclusions regarding assembly except I won't be using the helmet. I'm also going to go with the same color scheme for the train car. How did you do the newspaper?
    Nice job BTW

    Hi Neal

Looking forward to seeing more on this

I also think this would be good with a few additions of putty .....

Rework the hair to being more unkept and straggly

Open a pocket up , maybe a torn sleeve

On painting : dirty them up , 5 o'clock shadow , bags under the eyes through lack of sleep

Just my thoughts ...plenty of potential to really lift this already good piece

    Happy benchtime

Thanks Mike. As you say it’s a great concept from Peter and something a little more unusual than a straight “up and down” piece.

Hi captnenglish, thanks for the comments. The newspaper is from a link Peter at Sarnia has on his website as a pdf which has a few images of newspapers from May/June 1940. You can then scale it to size and print it off. I attached it to the figure with white Pva glue. If you look on Peter’s thread re his build of this kit I think the link is on there.

Hi Nap. Agree, there is plenty of scope to put your own stamp on this and some great ideas re the individual touches that could be made. I’m going to add some weathering to the uniforms but think I’ll leave the putty pushing to the experts.
