As I say, according to my grandad, who had been a career soldier in the 1920s and 30s, left, then re enlisted when war broke out, the tapes on the berets were not supposed to be seen when it was worn, as it was considered untidy!!(y)

As I say Nap, we were told to cut them off (the ties). The reason being only the French wore the beret with ties.

    Hi Steve and Bob

Thanks for input ...no ties it is ...also took them off the Frost bust as well I've nearly finished

    Couple of iffy pics

Moved the badge at a very slight angle ....did it as in pic but looked awkward

Also built up the beret at the back

    Hi Guys

    Verbal update

It's been a harrowing time ...showed Mrs Nap .....she thought the head looked too far forward and looking down .......

So being a dutiful husband ...off came his head ( I got this from flea bay and the previous owner had added a mass of Milliput to the collar/ neck area )

Bit miffed I never noticed it before so....out came the dremel and out came a lot of Milliput ......

I then pinned the head in place and then reworked the coat after filling the gaps underneath the neck

Looking at his life he went to Oxford University in Christ Church college ...so why not give him a college scarf as well ...see below ( won't put the crest on when painting )

This worked well I hope !!

The name plate will include the words "An Officer and a Gentleman"

    It is now all rebasecoated

Nice progress Nap. What I love is the careful preparation before painting. It's really great to see such great threads, especially for people like me who can't paint, but would like to try it once :) Thanks for sharing ...

    Cheers Borek

P.S. Adjusting the head position helped, I think. Now it really looks more elegant :)

Oi Oi Mr putty fingers!...stick at it mate, the position of the head looks better now, the badge looks good, so best of luck on the "new" beret, I thought what you had already done looked okay, but I know where your coming from by starting again with it..That Ole nagging doubt eh!..tricky to get the right WW11 look to the beret as they wore them in so many different rackish way's but I know you'll crack it, add plenty of creases coming from the edge of the beret towards the centre,
    Keep at it that man!
    Cheers
    Jim(y)
P.S Just as a small point of interest.... the previous black & white photo of 4 paras together posted by Steve is taken from the 1953 film "The Red Beret" on the far right is the actor Alan Ladd.. the way the corporal wears his beret is a bit more modern than WW11.

Good to see progress Nap, like others, I really like to see how you get to the end, and it certainly has been a reason for me having started fixing/converting figures. I used to simply glue the bits together and slap some paint on...

I agree about the beret, whilst it looked good as it was, it was lacking that little... you know what .
On the subject of, berets seem to be a bit of a individual/fashion thing, in WWII photos many wear the beret with almost artist's flair, and of course there is the 'flatcap stylee' so beloved by the paras in the 1970/1980's (no doubt to go with the moustache...,)

Looking forward to the finished Lt. COL. Frost. I didnt get much bench time, but hopefully next weekend.

Excellent Nap. That beret looks much better, especially painted up, and the numbers really finish off those straps.

    Hi Henk

Thanks for commenting , it does look better ,the badge I am pleased with as well , added the numbers for a bit more interest , might slightly lighten the coat a bit further

    Then it's just the flesh

Then onto another ...bit more colour hopefully ...till I get the other two !
