Panic buying.....not me !

Just returned from a visit to the supermarket where I saw for myself scenes of what
I believe are called 'panic buying'. For reasons passing understanding, people were
snatching up huge quantities of toilet rolls, anti-bacterial soap, and of all things, tubs
of pepper. Is black pepper some kind of secret antedote for pestilential viruses - come
to that, do toilet rolls hold other similar and mysterious qualities ?

So now, I sit here fiddling with a long line of Vladimir Danilov's figures - dogs, hyenas,
Italian bandits, arguing Imperial Romans, not to mention the beloved Emperor about
to come a purler having been startled by that hare, and five more Greeks and Persians
winging their way to me as I write - wondering what drives such irrational buying ?
Thank goodness that many of us are immune from such behaviour......eh?

Not me...... I've been panic buying models for years........ the panic sets in if the missus gets to the AmEx bill before me
That being said there is probably some sense in uping your stock of toilet paper, Beluga caviar, Foie Gras ......you know, your everyday items........

thanks to the (social)media it is bigger then it should be.
For the record: Last year into the Netherlands, 400.000 people get the flue. 2900 died. Nobody says anything about that.
The corona virus is from along time in our life. There are alot of Corona viruses around us.
SARS was a corona RNA mutant....in 2003. 8718 people got the disease.....and 711 people died from it..
MERC was also a corona RNA mutant in 2013 ....total global infected where 2949 and 780 people died.
The Corona virus COVID-19 has a global infection of 106.800 untill 8 march. What you don't hear is that 60.362 people recoverd. 3600 people died worldwide.

so what I wanna say is that MERC was more diedly then the Corona from today.
But the media have nothing more to report every hour and every journal on TV about the tremendous outbreak of this virus.
For the healthy people (luckly the most are) it is nothing more then a light version of the flue.
For the old, sick and weak healthy people it is more then that...but that is also for a normal flue.

So let us stop with panic buying.....the corona flue will get over when it is become spring.

I am with DEL - in the face of certain death you should allow yourself a last treat and buy things that make your life happy - I left the toilet paper for the people in need and just got me the Poste Militaire Mounted Chasseur de la Garde Imperial (thank you Anthony:happy:) ....it raised my health status considerably and I think that there is now a slight chance that I am gonna make it:D

I saw a countdown timer on a spiramirabilis picture and panicked. But I have to admit, I do like pepper in my food quite a bit; wouldn't want to go without.

Wouldn’it be great, staying in home quarantine (preventive, I’d rather not get this to be honest) for two weeks and finally have some decent benchtime?! The perfect excuse.

the problem is that there is still no effective cure and it is traveling very fast. Don't panic, but follow a strict protocol. Italy is starting to be the whole area under control (if the virus does not kill me, the economic loss will kill me ... there are no people who buy my products .. I have an ice cream parlor) Also in Italy other forms of flu have caused many deaths, but there is talk of deaths spread in the year not in a few days. If forced into the house, I will take back the long-abandoned brushes in my hand

This thread began as a bit of light hearted nonsense aimed at irrational people here buying up loo rolls and whatever.
What you have reminded us Jai is just how serious things really are in your country. Italy has been a cherished place
for Cheryl and I for many years - indeed we have a lot of firm friends there. Stay strong, Jai. Onr day, hopefully sooner
than later, this will all pass.

of course I am always positive (positive not to the virus I hope) I am worried about my job started a few years ago and in which I invested everything and obviously worried also to people close to me or far away from me. I always put her on laughing because I learned that it is useless to be too serious. In this regard, I'm sorry the 3D on the Archimedes' coronavirus puppet has been deleted ... it was a way to relax as we should always relax when we take the brushes in hand. Sooner or later this emergency will end and I hope it will not become a big problem in other countries too. Now I'm going to uncork a beer to the health of all the planets .... If the English is incorrect, blame google

To all my friends in usa uk france germany belgium (and rest of the world)
The issue is the following, for everyone that is worried about Coronavirus and who wrote me:
    1) it is extremely contagious, more than the flu
    2) there is no medicine to cure it
    3) if you catch it, and are young and healthy, they quarantine you at home (there is no known cure) and they wait for your immune system to work it out. And, even if you are young & healthy, you are still a carrier (even without knowing it), infecting others, especially older people, who are at higher risk of death
    4) if you catch it, young or old, you might end up entubated for up to 3 weeks, if with issues (pre-existing conditions, older ie 60+), it could turn into pneumonia and can kill you
    5) for coronavirus pneumonia, worst case, there is no cure, the only medicine hospitals are experimenting is an HIV/ebola cocktail and ventilation (ie you are hooked up to a machine which keeps your lungs alive)
    6) there is no vaccine or anything that you can take over the counter that can help you in any case.

I am not creating panic, I am telling you what I know and what others aren’t telling you. So, what can you do? Stay home, from now. It’s already there but it takes 15 days to show: get out just for groceries. Don’t go in crowded places, don’t touch stuff and then touch your eyes, face, nose, don’t pick your nose, I saw you, your mouth. No kisses on the cheek, stay as far as it takes not to get spit drops on you or feel the breath. When you get home, take off your shoes. Change clothes. Wash your hands constantly with warm water and soap for at least 60 seconds. If you will feel cold, start coffing, asthma, heavy chest, and it’s not a panic attack, call the number your State is telling to call. Don’t go near people or at the ER: do not infect others. Be a grown up. Eat well. Sleep well. Wash your dog’s paws if you walked it. Pets are not caring this disease. So, don’t be a horrible person. Be responsible. Stay home, far from others. Same thing here in AUS was doing my shopping all the toilet rolls gone, now the pasta and rice are on their hit list as well.
I've been stocking up on red wine and Tamiya glue, the green cap one, maybe should get some Tamiya black as its always the one that runs out first.

On a serious note I think its very sad and a bit spooky. Once they start talking about putting army tents up on sporting grounds it starts to feel like a movie, not real life. I lost my Father and Brother to cancer in the last few years so I feel very sad for the people who lose their love ones. I hope this sorts itself out quickly and hope Governments do the right thing by people as a whole and not worry about trade over people at this point.

Now, I don't want to be alarmist, but realist yes.
I've always been told that math is not an opinion, so I look at the numbers.
Not the belly, not the fear, not the fake news. The numbers.
I count them not for us who are starting to imagine the extent of the wave that will come soon. I count them for those who can avoid getting to this point.
In my region we started with a case. The first few days I thought that everything was exaggerated, after all we only had one case confined to the hospital.
After a week there were 45 cases, little stuff. And then they were far apart.
The second week I started monitoring the numbers and saw them rise. Little by little, like bread dough. In the end there were 221 cases. 176 more in a week.
Now only four days have passed. 552 cases. 376 more. In four days.
You don't see it, you don't hear it, you don't touch it and when it arrives you can only stem the problem, but you will be overwhelmed. Activities risk bankruptcy, hospitals need specialized personnel and equipment. Otherwise you die. I don't think of my corner of the lucky world that will make it, with so much effort, but it will make it. I think of the areas where hospitals, doctors, instruments are not in the blink of an eye. I think about the disastrous consequences of all this and I can't keep quiet.
When everything is over, we can open debates on emergency management, on how stupid those who are afraid or those who do not have it. We will be able to reason on the meaning of life and death. On nature that takes up its space and gets rid of us, the true virus of the earth.
For now, let's focus on limiting travel and relationships with other people as much as possible. We stay at home, we read a good book. We go to work protecting us and the people around us. We make virtual aperitifs. We ask for help. We help those who may need. Let's write, call, stay close in every way possible, but not physically. It is a small effort, after all, which can make a difference.
