    Hello guys

I open a new thread instead of resurrecting 54mm 5th hussar regiment.

It's a metal figure I found many years ago in a flea market in Tel Aviv. Had no box or even a bag. I Did not recognize the manufacturer. It was primed and then sat in my GA for about 12 years. It now has a face:

Please share your thoughts and tips

What nationality is your figure? Am guessing Prussian or Austrian, Seven Years War period?

Prussian, 1758, 5th hussar regiment, but I guess it can be painted in other regiment's colors as well

I think it´s from Franklin Mint, perhaps. On the underside of the groundwork must stand the regimental title. On the mirliton, there must be a deathhead with crossed bones for the fifth regiment "Von Ruesch".

What is the badge on the sabretache, can't quite make it out on the photo? Can see a crown but not what's beneath it.

Tom, thank you for the comment

The regimental title in the bottom reads: "HUSAREN-REGIMENT FURST BLUCHER VON WAHLSTATT NR.5 1758".
As discussed in the original thread from 2007 (see link in the first post of this thread), and according some reference I managed to gather, a mirliton with deadhead was worn by regular soldiers of the 5th. Officers and NCOs (my guy here is probably an NCO) had a cockade on their's

    Hi Benny

Nice find in the market ...considering the age a good natural pose ...will paint up well

Good start on the face as well

Are you filling in the hole on the pelisse at the sleeve top ?

Look forward to seeing more on this

    Happy benchtime

    Hey Richard

I don't have the figure with me right now. Tried to manipulate the photo so it's clearer. If needed, I'll try to take a better picture of the sabretache in the evening

As obvious as this blemish is, I did not notice it before taking those pictures... Yes, I will fill it in my next bench session which I hope will be in a much smaller interval than the previous one...

    Hi Benny,

Nice looking model. If you are inclined, perhaps you may wish to increase the height of the mirliton which appears taller in on-line pictures of the period?

    Thank you Blaster,

I quickly reviewed my humble Pinterest 5th Hussar picture collection (https://www.pinterest.com/bennygazer/5th-prussian-hussar-regiment/), and I see now what you are talking about.
Unfortunately, when I consider the limits of my time and skills, I think I will keep the mirliton as is :)

    Cheers,

    Benny

Just retouched the face and hair a bit. The Corona is not good for my hobby - I am a surgeon, so no work from home for me, plus have 3 little kids who are out of kindergarten due to the healthcare new regulations and totally exhaust my wife... You can imagine that when I come back home from work, I don't even dare ask my wife for some bench time.
In the little bench time I can steal here and there, I work on finishing touches to my 28mm Dominique Jean Larrey.
Anyway, enough with my rants, here is a picture:

I was thinking about my last post on this thread and realized my lack of sensitivity.
I have problems of "lucky people" - my family is healthy, and I am not forced to stay out of my workplace.
My thoughts for PF members in other countries who suffer heavy case loads and mortality from this outbreak (like Italy and Spain, but also others) - hope everything will improve soon.
    Keep safe!

Hi Benny. Glad to see you managed a little bench time. I applaud the health care workers and their families across the world. You and your family stay safe.

    Cheers,

Those Franklin Mint figures were very nicely done. I've got a few in my collection, too. I'm eager to follow your progress on this one.

    Prost!

    Hello all

Got some free bench time, courtesy of SWMBO, and got to try a mix for the trousers which should be "buff", a layer for the musket strap, and some first time (for me) of painting black.
All the above done with acrylics. I experience difficulties in achieving smooth transitions between shades and layers (I intentionally avoid the term "blending" because what I do here with the acrylics is not blending. It should be described as "layering")
Please share your honest feedback and comments - I wish to learn!

    Cheers, Benny

    Hi Benny

Thanks to SWMBO for the benchtime

Good to see this coming along ...black is so difficult to get right , a little hard to see on the picture but I think you can push the highs a little more , using pure black for the shadows only

As this comes together even now it's plain to see the attraction of older figures which still paint up well

    Thanks for sharing

    Happy benchtime

    Thank you Nap

I did some homework during the past week, and found some helpful YouTube videos on various techniques to blend acrylics. I will try them the next time I have an opportunity to work on this figure, and also will try to push the highlights a little more

    Cheers,

    Hello Planet,

After a long long hiatus, I am back to paining my hussar.
    1. Here I try my new artist acrylics (some Rembrandt, some Schmincke) in order to establish a limited palette based on Michael Wilcox's book. Due to my limited bench time, the learning process is a bit tedious and frustrating in the sense that until my next session, which can be who knows when, I might forget the lessons I learn.. In general I am happy with them and eager to master their use.
    2. I painted the mirlitone, and added from Greenstuff what seemed to me to be a missing cord/lace on top of it.
    3. I base coated the pelisse and started some gentle highlighting. My references suggest that the fur lining was darker than the pelisse itself. The cords, buttons, and decorations will be painted later.
    4. I discovered some annoying tiny spots on the pelisse where the paint chipped off. Although noticeable, they are so tiny that I find it hard to decide if it's exposed metal or the grey primer. Anyhow, my gut feeling is that my paints are not the fault, but rather bad preparation of the figure for priming, or some dirt which accumulated over time on the primer. Anyhow, as this is mainly a learning project for me, I think I will push through it, and learn to live with those blemishes. I don't want to strip it and start over...

As always, I will appreciate your comments and insights,

    Benny
