Hello!

After painting many 1/35 figures, I decided to try with sculpting, of course in bigger scale
I always wanted to make a rider with horse, so I chose this interesting subject-elite horseman of the Sassanid empire. They rode the powerful and swift Nisean horse, extinct now.
Accidently I encountered Sergey Zlobov's way of sculpting horses and immideatly was inspired by his work and I bought some materials and started sculpting.
Using mainly Magic Sculp, but also Milliput for base work and Greenstuff. There's still some work, on the legs especially, veins on the head and body etc., but I like the result-for a first sculpt

Excellent work ! I too have read Sergey Zlobov's articles on sculpting horses and can well understand their inspiration.
Did you use a wire armature or did you follow his other technique of using a card 'silhouette' and spacing pegs ?

Hi,

I used his technique of "card silhouette", but I made hollow two halves for the body, using silicone, again his technique

By the way I didn't made the mane, because the horse will have barding in the front-chest, neck and head. Probably I will make mold to cast and have the bare horse in hand, if I want to make different layouts.

Found the ebooks on armature method, but where's the card one?

I had them as a series of bookmarks on my web browser, Neil, but for reasons unknown they suddenly disappeared.
What I have left is just a series of images taken from the articles...........I'll dig them out for you if I can

BTW: Last time I did a horse it was for my 1/10 samurai (40+ years ago and still on the stocks)

By the way I ordered Beesputty tripple firm to try different medium, heard very good things about it. Probably I will try it for the horseman.

As the horse and the rider will have lamelar armor, I tried to imitate the lamelar plates with a homemade stamp. I will make different shapes to see which I will like more
Also I will try to make tool for making chainmail, so any advice will be of help, thanks!

I've been trying something similar for my 1/12th samurai using the Blue-Stuff to create a mould from a master into which I can press putty to form strips of plates (as per the originals)... so far with very mixed results


Your method is an alternative, but how did you make the 'female/negative' stamp from what I assume was a 'male/positive' master?

I also intended making a mould for chainmail (Japanese mail is a bugger!), so I'd also welcome any ideas.

I have also Bluestuff, but the produced detail is not sharp enough and this is quicker

I have tried this for chainmail, I don't know if it looks convincing, but it is easy to apply, I will try several methods to see what is the best

I've toyed with the idea of a master tool for individual laminae so I may give it a go.

I'm proceeding with renewed enthusiasm and the horse's equiment-leather peices over which the lamelar plates were sewn and a cloth under the chest pieces.
I mixed Magic sculp with Greenstuff, which gives a bit more elasticity to the mix and the thin pieces will not brake easily.

Love to see these posts and marvel at the skill and ingenuity of you guys. Don't put yourself down by the way, we can all read about the techniques but it still takes talent, dedication and skill to make it happen.
