I can see from a number of references that the Gordon Highlanders wore two different sets on the kilts:- one with 2 gold (yellow) vertical lines seen at the front of the kilt and one with 3 vertical lines.
1. Did these difference come in from the 75th Regiment of foot and from the 92nd The Gordon Highlanders on their linking under the Cardwell reforms?
2. Would particularly like to know to what regiment then battalion did these sets belong?
or
3. When they linked together in 1881 did the officers, SNCOS and musicians wear one set and the soldiers the other(and which way round) in both battalions?
I am also particularly interested what set was worn by the 92nd at Waterloo. The answer to 2 above should resolve this matter.

Could it simply be the way the kilt is worn?
If one of the lines is central, then you'd probably see the other two (i.e. three lines)
Turn the kilt slightly and only two would be visible.
Just a thought.

Thanks Mirof re the centjours site, which is well known to me, and is a part source to my question. As can be seen from the pictures copied from that site of the 92nd they show 2 stripes with most examples but the drum major has a central stripe, with the other two at the sides, though unseen in this example. The example of the late 19th /early 20th century soldiers is from the Uniformology site, the other is a more modern image from Pinterest, and shows an officer with 2 and a sergeant with 3 stripes?

Not convinced about the kilt askew argument, the Regimental Sergeant Major and other sncos would have jumped on such sloppiness.
