    I totally agree.

One observation/question: I am a complete layman regarding the 1st WW and its participants, but I noticed that the rifle seems rather short. Were these soldiers issued with a shorter (carbine) version of the standard infantery rifle to accomodate their job?

Johan, this is indeed the short Karabiner 98, originally issued to cavalry units, but later on also to Sturmtruppen. It was 150mm shorter than the Gewehr98 issued to infantry.

According to my current research on Austrian stormtroopers, they were issued carbines, as were the Germans from which this type of special unit was based on.

Something else I found interesting, is many considered the German helmet design having too long a front bill. There are photos showing the helmet worn backwards, or even having the bill cut off, to allow a better unobstructed view.

Quite interestingly, even Italian assault troops (arditi), which performed a similar tactical role to their Austrian and German counterparts, used the shorter musket created for the cavalry

The logic behind this is rather simple, assault troops need firepower but precision is less important, aiming and shooting being quite different in a short distance encounter, so a shorter barrel/rifle length and less weight make the use of a weapon in close encounters and in a rush that much easier.
    Cheers!
