I can remember it arriving in Hanley back in the late 60's - it was largely complete back then, but it has suffered from museum staff and unqualified people "tinkering" with it over the years. There has been an ongoing fund raising effort to get it properly repaired (not airworthy) and when it's complete, it will be installed in a completely new gallery at the museum which is being built at the moment.

There's an excellent series on Netflix if you've an interest in this sort of thing called 'Plane Resurrection' (Just watched the first one so far which had an engineer from the UK who rebuilt a Mustang and now flies it. On the way he also became a Merlin re-builder and now rebuilds about 2 a year have done 30 odd so far!) Very interesting . . . .I now know where the phrase 'the whole nine yards' comes from too
