WIP Critique Starting my first flat ever

This morning I decided to have a bash at the flats I bought from Glorious Empires. Of course I had to start with Marshal Ney sustaining the rear guard on the retreat from Moscow, after the painting by Yvon.

I started by undercoating the flat in GW spray white and by painting a foam meat tray black craft acrylic paint for a contrasting paint surface and by cutting a slice out of the tray to take the rear of the flat's base. I decided on a light source originating from the right.

This is about an hour's work in acrylics and lots of inks and much more is needed. My inks work great on these little masterpieces. I need to improve the transitions and shade the left side of the faces better to respect the light source. But I have already decided that I really like painting these well sculpted scenes.

The Ney flat looks to be a little smaller than 54mm.

Here's the company's painted example. I will go for a less chromatic and more "realistic" finish.

I really like what you've done with the faces. All of them, and Ney in particular, have a much more life-like appearance.
Looking forward to seeing what you do next.

    Cheers,

Excellent choice for a first Colin . Faces look superb , I seem to have seen a print of this some time back which would be a great colour ref.
Thought about doing it in three dimensions but deemed it to difficult for my skills
