I've got the MMM naval captain on the go, but I've a question re his cap. all the pics I can see show oak leaves along the peak, is that just a dress a cap and they wore a plain peak at sea or do I need to paint some on ?

Steve, Commanders and above wore peaked caps with oak leaves so if you don't want to paint them depict a Sub Lieutenant, Lieutenant or Lieutenant Commander. This was for all forms of dress.
Incidentally an officer of those ranks can still be the Captain of a vessel, the smaller the ship the lower the rank the Captain is, For example a lieutenant can be the skipper of a minesweeper.
