Completed Critique Roman Legionary 1st century BC - Soldiers - 54mm

    Hi All,

Here's one I just finished: An older metal 54mm figure from Soldiers, sculpted by Adriano Laruccia. Intended as a quick and simple project, but the pose makes assembly and painting quite challenging unfortunately, as both arms and the shield must be well aligned. There are no clear location pins on the arms so lots of dry fitting is required before things can be glued into place. I keep underestimating the effect required for assembly....

Painting is done with acrylics, with minimal use of oils on the shield (some stains and outlining of the boss).

I wanted to depict the figure standing in a summer field with high grass and poppies; the latter are from Fredericus Rex (laser cut paper). For color contrast with the groundwork I used yellows on the figure and shield. I think this has become my most colorful figure this far!

Thanks for looking and let me know any comments.

    Cheers
    Adrian

Adrian, this is a cracking job. Metalwork is really stand out but what impresses me most is the meadow.
Always a difficult judgement call as to how much vegetation to use, you've just about pushed it to the limit for a 54mm ....
    ..... and it works brilliantly.

Flesh, metals, fabrics, choice of colors, glazes and the idea of the poppies field add up to an exceptional work Adrian!

Wow! Beautifully rendered Adrian - your clean and concise style (on the shield for example) is inspirational and every texture and material is stunningly good. A work to aspire to - thanks for sharing it!

As has been commented on already, the finish on the helmet particularly caught my eye.

Always a pleasure to watch your work. That helmet my friend! Overall, great job, especially thinking that it is 54mm figure which is much harder to paint than 75 or 90mm in my opinion.
