Here goes an attempt at a little tutorial on flat painting using a 120mm resin figure from MilMart.

The fig. was first primed and given a few coats of buff coloured acrylic.

Basic blocking in of the coatee and equipment with acrylic.

If you can cast your minds back to art lessons at school, assuming you can remember that far back or even bothered going to school, :D this is how we were taught to shade a cylinder.

    Cylinder.jpg

Now we have to imagine a light source for our figure, in this case it will be from the top right (as we are looking at it), shining into the soldiers face.
Imagine also that the figures arms and torso are cylinder shaped and begin adding shadows to the cylinders.
I am using oils here and blending with a dry brush as I go.

great start to the sbs mate, when you say you are using a dry brush for the blending do you stipple the paint or very lightly brush it?.
sorry if this sounds a bit of a daft question.

There's no daft questions Tony and unfortunately no straight answers, :D I kind of stipple a bit then lightly brush the edges to blend it in. Hope that makes sense.
If you're using acrylics it doesn't matter, just build up the shade and light with thin layers of heavily diluted paint to achieve the effect.

Top tip with oils is to use the barest minimum of paint, don't do what I did starting out and layer it on like pussers topcoat.

"Imagine Sammy Sunshine is shining from the top left hand corner of your page...." said my art teacher, back in the mists of time! Interesting to see this develop Roger - I fancy having a go at one of these flats sometime soon.(y)

Thanks for this Roger. Great tip about using the oils lightly. When I first started I had bloody oil paint everywhere, mainly on me, and far too thick trying get the colour right, rather than have the white base showing through below. What a mess! Now with an acrylic base of the colour being used, the light coat works well.

I use this technique for any size of figure, only the size of the brush and amount of paint changes.
