I liked the pose of this one BUT way out of my comfort zone by about 900 years. Can this one be painted for the first Crusades around 1096.
Any reference will be gratefully received.

Bob this is a magnificent miniature.Never mind your comfort zone mate,I've seen what you are capable of outside of it.Go for it!You do not need any reference. This figure fits absolutely the timeframe of the 1st crusade. As a rule most soldiers went down there with their own homespun clothes and every once and then, when one of the rich barons who took part would have a "vision" of the Virgin Mary or the likes he would sacrifice a few yards of expensive cloth to be cut up in little crosses and distributed to the rank and file who in turn would go on and sew it up on various parts of their clothes. So it is only your fantasy and consumate skill that is needed.Don't forget to post pics!!!!

Shucks beat me to it Andrew (I've just been rummaging through the Men at Arms books I have) :)
There's a few pages in one of the Funcken books too Bob, but I'm not sure they add anything else to the later illustrations which Andrew has already posted
    Cheers

    Thanks Paul,

I think I now have enough to go on for now, think I will stick to 19th Century after this one.

As I posted before, some were flat, some were slightly curved and some were heavily curved. according to the evidence, research and conclusions reached by others. If you have conclusive proof one way or the other do please share.
