1/10th Sovereign 2000 bust of an Officer of 71st Highland Light Infantry in the Crimea 1854.

I have had this one on my list for sometime and finally got one from Steve Kirtley.

After the usual trimming, washing and priming I started, as usual with the head, eyes first in acrylics, then the flesh using Artist's oils. I also painted the base coat of the beard and hair in dilute Artist's oils, then the caps colours were blocked in using Vallejo acrylics.

With the face finished and the beard dry I added highlights to the beard and hair with acrylics, still a bit more to do there. The pipe stem was painted, the rest of the pipe was painted using oils and is drying. more work to do on the cap( I hate those chequered cap bands).

    Generally pleased so fair

Thanks Mick, I think he has a real bit of character with the pipe, but then I am biased as an ex-pipe smoker.

Looking very good, the Crimea being a favourite period for me, as well as Napoleonic.
    Looking forward to more.

Like Nap, I also painted this one many moons ago, when it was still a 'Wolf Miniatures' kit.
The various textures are interesting to work with.

    Cheers,

More progress, this time on the body part.
Colour blocking over the wool of the outer coat but leaving the undercoat showing to show depth and a colour variation also added.

    P1120541.JPG P1120542.JPG

Tunic basics painted on, then a dark hull red added to the underside of the creases for the shadows and then crimson wash applied to the sash and a flat red to the tunic. The collar is buff.

    P1120543.JPG P1120545 (2).JPG

I added a rough coat of neat Davy's Gray Artist's oils to the neck area of the sheepskin collar to give the dirty neck/hair look.

Highlights now to add to the tunic and sash and various coats to the outer coat.

Good to see the maroon contrast with the sash, far more in keeping the officer of the day.
The sheepskin works very well with the grubby collar.

Many thanks Keith, I do see quite a few models where the contrast just isn't enough, as for the collar the boxart gave me the idea, I think it was done on there, unless it is shadow.

I did a bit more late last evening and this morning.

Outer coat given another wash over and darker crease area a darker wash. Cap badge and buttons painted with ochre/pearl medium mix, and the tunic and sash highlighted.

Just a bit more to do then I shall call him done.

HaHa Mick, still the pipe to attach and a good look over him to check nothing missed then underneath and stem to paint and fix into base. So still a few hours work. ;)
