Takes me back many, many years to when I painted the similarish 100mm figure for Hinchliffe Models, sculpted by Mike Tapavica.

Hi Geoff yes it was based on that 100mm figure I thought it would be good to do something for the modern day figure painter who would love to see something like it out again.
    Thanks Barrie & Maco

Ian a great release, the side view shows how Moz has successfully captured the beligerant stance of the old guardsman.

Hi All just had Moz on the phone we have put the wrong date on the figure it should have been 1807 as that is when the flag is dated from. sorry for the confusion

Cheers Gordon Moz did it again .

Nice sculpt, (I have many of Maurice's pieces in my grey army and am not challenging his skill as a sculptor), but I still have doubts about this depiction.
The issue of the wrong flag for 1815 has now been addressed, but when, in 1807, were the 1st Grenadiers ever "at bay"? Even at the crisis point of Eylau, the Old guard infantry had not been engaged, so why the tattered standard?

Even if the French flags were carried into battle, (as opposed to the unadorned eagle itself), which I personally believe to be unlikely, they would, in the earlier period, be carried by a sergeant Major supported by the company fourriers, and after 1808, by a lieutenant or sous Lieutenant, supported by two NCO's. Why is it apparently depicted being carried by a rank and filer without any rank distinctions on the coat sleeves? This was a privileged
    position after all.
The Eagle bearer should wear a crossbelt across the left shoulder bearing a socket to carry the shaft of the eagle in, and he would not be likely to be wearing the knapsack. He would also be armed with pistols and a sword.
On a purely visual basis, the bearskin also looks wrong to me , being deeper front to back than side to side but this is admittedly only a small niggle.

Overall, and despite Maurice's clarification, to me, this still ends up appearing, if not intending to be, another depiction of Victor Hugo's myth, (or downright lie), about the "Guard's death" at Waterloo, rather than any actual event.
It is however nice, after all that moaning, to see Ellie's Miniatures will be tackling the 1st Empire period.

I have commented earlier that this figure is clearly inspired by a 100mm Mike Tapavica piece from the early 1980's & Ian has confirmed this. That original figure was sculpted with a plain standard leaving it up to the painter to tackle the design & therefore the period. (I know because I did the box art piece for Hinchliffe Models.) Mike Tapavica entered the figure in one of the American shows at the time & this was featured in a Campaigns magazine. It also featured in Military Modelling with an article on Mike Tapavica's work. That particular figure was clearly intended to depict the Old Guard at Bay at Waterloo depicting a soldier, rather than Officer or other member of the escort, who maybe has picked up the fallen standard..
Personally I have no particular problem with the piece as a depiction of an almost mythical moment & I guess that each will make their own decision.
