    Hello everybody ,

Time to share the latest release from Bustory , the very same company that brought you Butcher that I reviewed here as well

The actual sculpting was announced here:

    The actual release here:

As you can see its based on the main characater in the films Apocalypto both 1 and 2 , directed by Mel Gibson , he of Braveheart fame .

    z.jpg zzzzz.jpg zzzz.jpg
The release continues in the film theme as with the previous Butcher release , Apocalypto being a veritable blood bath with human sacrifice, graphic battles scenes all set in amongst the Mayan culture .
    zzz.jpg zzzzzz.jpg zzzzzzz.jpg zz.jpg

Without doubt looking at the Maya it will lead you to the Aztecs as well and the Conquistadres and the whole period of history is fascinating to research .

Like the Aztecs the Maya were skilled in building and gold work and considered very advanced in their thoughts and idea's , using drugs and potions to cure and kill .

Books are to be found here are a few

    General comments:

The wooden base in the main picture is not included this was for the release display only .

As with the previous release we are again spoilt with the laser cut boxwood container , this itself was shrink wrapped with plastic film ...all presenting a professional image .
    Maya 001.jpg
As its laser cut the fit is tight and I used a old butter knife to gently work the top off !! , like Howard Carter when he opened up the tomb in Egypt I was greeted by a very sharply cut out very thick foam surround in the shape of the bust , this fitted snugly and safely into the cutout , there is also a small oblong cut into the foam this held in a bag the remaining parts .

Fitting over these cutouts there is another piece of foam , the whole packaging is of a very high standard .

On the top and underside there is Mayan design aaa.jpg and a picture of the bust with a weapon ( this is not included ) aa.jpg Parts consist of the main torso , skull , hair top piece, lower jawbone , side decoration pieces for the jaw , 4 other deoorations for the ears , no actual base is included .

    Prep

Main Torso...Nothing apart from a fine casting line to quickly sand away on the shoulders/neck

Remaining pieces ...remove from formers and fit in position

    So that was easy !!!

    First impressions

This is a large sculpt and very imposing and certainly exhudes the power of the character in the film

    Features are extremely well captured

Casting quality is very high indeed

No fitting instructions are included for the attachments

Lets look at the rein now

    Main Torso

The first thing I am going to say is that this is PACKED full of detail from the top to the bottom .

    Maya 004.jpg

Starting with the hair this is finely worked , pulled up and backwards , the strands are very nicely done , at the top we have a hole for the remaining "pony tails" .

    Maya 014.jpg

Around the head is a band of pure skill at sculpting , the stitching holding the pieces in are cleanly done with definition of the straight and pointed pieces being the same , good undercuts ..certainly an imposing piece of headwear with the undercuts all over also very nicely done

The facial features are again very well sculpted , and I think the character has been captured well , eyebrows are well shown , the eyes are a good shape and with no blemishes , creases at the sides are evident with a scar on the right cheek .

    Maya 013.jpg
The ears are elongated as seen in references with many piercings , these continue on the nose and the nostril area and also the chin.

Muscle definition is good on the neck , straining slightly with the flesh is nicely textured but not overdone

On the shoulders we have the armour , exactly as in the movie itself and very accurate in style in respect the individual plates , excellent cross stitching on each one , where the armour meets the shoulder plates are raised slightly as they would have done with the human form .

On the lower edge we have 14 pointed pieces again with a retaining stitch , the armour continues to snake over the shoulder and upper arm a single row moving round the back and tied up .

Across the chest there is a belt , shaped like a castle wall top on each edge , there are 3 teeth of various shapes , all good in look and held on by loops or ties .

The torso that shows has good muscle tone and as said a good texture ( made by using a scouring pad I believe)

    Maya 005.jpg Maya 006.jpg Maya 007.jpg Maya 008.jpg Maya 009.jpg Maya 010.jpg Maya 011.jpg Maya 012.jpg
The lower edge has a small section of a wall with a half circle design on .

This leads us to the rear of the piece and as with the Butcher release there is a design on it but WOW what a choice , based on carvings found this depicts a warrior and the detail work is as the Maya did it , , the features all look great .
    Maya 003.jpg
This idea is a nice addition and an area normally left blank but the team at Bustory have really gone for it here and it works well .

    Pony Tails

This is a double set , with the hair being separated into 2 , the texture is good and it fits easily to the hole that is provided in the top of the head , no filler is required , the hair is held in place by cloth bands and a small piece running at an angle on the front ...again all well sculpted .

    Maya 015.jpg Maya 016.jpg

    Skull/Lower Jaw

Both these are very well sculpted , the skull fits slightly back on the front of the headband itself ., the texture of the bone is all there , nostrils and eye sockets are good , teeth that look lethal!!!

    Maya 020.jpg

The lower jaw piece is of the same high quality , excellent work on the long teeth at the front with the individual side teeth showing nice surface work , fit is easy to the side and looks very impressive , I would suggest you fit this last after painting the head.

    Maya 018.jpg Maya 017.jpg
    Remaining decorations

Enough to say the quality continues , sharp sculpting brought out by sharp casting , the details included are nicely done and include beads and yet more teeth !!! ...In place they look very good.

    Maya 022.jpg Maya 021.jpg

    Final Thoughts

This is an impressive piece of work and continues to show how much work and commitment goes into a release by Bustory , the quality is 1st class as its sculpting , casting and of course the presentation. The subject matter is certainly interesting and is a challenge to the painter , the period of history is not often seen and I welcome this addition

    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

this is definitely a very nice bust ! i'm only bothering a little about the skin texture as i find it on the overdone side, but i guess it could be easily smoothed with a little work :)
    thanks for the review !
