Hello out there out in Resin land

We all know of Nuts Planet , and look forward to releases and I am pleased to be able to share a release from the history of Korea itself .

Announced in Social media and here on PF:

    http://www.planetfigure.com/threads/nutsplanet-s-new-release-of-january.82225/

The release is this bust :

    Who was this warrior
    z.jpg
    Born: April 28, 1545

    Died: December 16, 1598

Yi Sun-sin was originally an Army Commander who earned his reputation fighting Manchu nomads on Korea’s northern border. After a period out of power, he was made Commander of the Cholla Naval District. Faced with the looming threat of a Japanese invasion, Yi took vigorous measures to prepare his fleet for war. He began collecting supplies and improving the equipment on his ships.
Alongside the cannon armed warships – known as panokseon, which formed the core of his fleet – he built a number of geobukseon (turtle ships), whose upper decks were enclosed in iron plates. Yi’s task as an Admiral was to maneuver these gun platforms so that his cannons – firing solid shot and incendiary rounds – destroyed the lighter Japanese warships, while avoiding being boarded by the well-armed Japanese soldiers. Yi achieved this by exploiting his superior knowledge of the sea currents and channels around the Korean coastline.
Yi is credited with 23 victories against Japan. His greatest triumph during the first invasion was the engagement at Hansando, in August 1592, where the Japanese ships had been lured into an encirclement from which only a handful escaped
Success earned him jealousy at the Korean courts, however. Yi was arrested, tortured, and relegated to common soldier. A severe naval defeat during the Second Japanese Invasion quickly brought Yi’s reinstatement as Admiral.[

Why was Admiral Yi was so successful :
He took a big interest in his men and ensured that his soldiers, supplies, and his ships were well-maintained.
The turtle ship also played a significant role in his victories. He expertly navigated them against the Japanese because he had knowledge of the Korean coast and knew the sea tides and used the terrain and weather to his advantage.

Like most great leaders, he was charismatic and excelled at motivating his soldiers and sailors. He treated them with respect and dignity and in return earned their loyalty.
His turtle ships had stronger hulls than the Japanese ships of that period. They were also capable of carrying at least 20 cannons which were useful in broadside actions .
While his skill in battle demonstrates the strategic prowess of Admiral Yi, this victory alone failed to slow or stop the Japanese campaign in Korea.

During the final struggle of the war at Noryang in November 1598, Yi was shot by a Japanese arquebus and died on the deck of his ship. Admiral Yi Sun-sin is considered a national hero and is celebrated by statues in a number of Korean cities, including Seoul.

He has also been depicted in dramatic films of his life . aa.jpg

As always books of interst are included in the reviews , you might also want to look at the Chinese army's which are very similar and interesting to read about

    Release details are :

Title: Yi Sun-Sin (1548-1598) Korean Naval Commander

    Reference: NP-B028

    Scale:: 1/10th

    Material: Gray Resin

    No of parts: 13

    Sculptor : Jun Sik Ahn

    Box art : Myeong-ha Hwang

As with all the releases we have a good box , blue with the logo's emblazoned on it , on the top we see a box art view and on the side a further 4 views .

    Nuts Admiral 002.jpg

Parts are held safely betwenn foam layers with the smaller bits in a clear bag

Parts consist of main torso , head , helmet top and neck piece , forehead helmet piece , peak of helmet helmet plume , and mounting , 2 dragons , sword handle and tang and finally a base post.

    Nuts Admiral 003.jpg

    Prep

There are casting plugs to remove from under the torso arm and the helmet , the latter will need careful removal to ensure a clean fit , the neck piece has small plugs to remove , head has a further 2 to cut and sand away, helmet parts have small excess resin to remove with the same being on the horsehair one, the dragons have small pieces to take away and then fit in position. the trident has a small casting piece eto take away from the top as does the tang of the sword , the sword handle wlill need the tang fitting .

One thing good to note is that the trident has a piece of wire running through it ...good point as this could be very fragile .

I would suggest dry fitting all the pieces first and to paint the nck piece and face as separate items for ease.

If you are going to use the base then pin it for additional security and peace of mind.

    General comments

As with all the Nuts releases the quality of resin used is very high resulting in very good detail being easily cast .

The overall quality is very good as we have come to expect from Nuts Planet

    Now to the pieces themselves

In this part we will look just at the torso

    Main torso

A large piece of resin depicting the character in the dress as seen in references , fur edged which shows nice texture , the 2 central pieces are held together by clasp , nicely decorated with the neckline having flower like discs . Nuts Admiral 004.jpg

The whole of the clothing is full of discs of various sizes , studded and all perfectly round , these features continue round the back of the torso.
Nuts Admiral 008.jpg Nuts Admiral 007.jpg Nuts Admiral 005.jpg Nuts Admiral 009.jpg Nuts Admiral 006.jpg
At the waist there is a great dragon feature , this has excellent detail work by the sculptor particularly in the eyes and the teeth , coming off this we have a couple more discs and then 2 smaller animal , possibly prancing dragons or lions in Korean style....all of this adds a nice bit of detail .
    Nuts Admiral 010.jpg
On the shoulder there are cutouts ready to take the separate dragons .

The neck area is well formed and ready to take the head with ease

Folds of the heavy material are well shown and natural in positioning

    Onto the remaining resin now

    Face

Relying heavily on manuscripts and pictures the sculptor ha produced a accurate version of the subject , facial features are most certainly Korean in my opinion in style , excellent eye work , clearly cast with the lower eyes being slightly tired looking , the cheek bones are dominant and the nose and mouth are well sculpted , the beard he wears is again as seen in references , nice texture work
Nuts Admiral 022.jpg Nuts Admiral 020.jpg Nuts Admiral 021.jpg

    Neck Piece

The helmet has a 3 part neck protector all cast together the 2 side pieces sitting nicely onto the shoulder , the back hanging down inbetween the shoulderblades , fit is accurate and is looking slightly right .

As with the torso we have the same high quality of finish on the fur edges and the discs , along the top edge a line of nicely sculpted decoration continues .

Nuts Admiral 012.jpg Nuts Admiral 013.jpg Nuts Admiral 011.jpg

    Helmet /Helmet parts

The helmet consists of a total of 5 pieces , the main helmet , a peak and a forehead piece ( actually part of the helmet itself when in place) the horsehair piece on a post with the trident that fits onto the top.

The helmet is a pure dream of details , dragons , birds with great engraved decoration all over the edges all leading up to the top dome .

Nuts Admiral 014.jpg Nuts Admiral 015.jpg Nuts Admiral 016.jpg Nuts Admiral 017.jpg Nuts Admiral 018.jpg Nuts Admiral 019.jpg
Underneath we have the cutout for the forehead piece , there is a large piece of resin carefully worked to fit well into the actual 3 piece neck cloth itself.

Both the forehead and the peak pieces has exquisite detailing on it , really skilled work by the sculptor is clearly evident in this and the helmet itself.
Nuts Admiral 024.jpg Nuts Admiral 025.jpg
The horse hair piece wraps itself around the pole nicely , this has a set of 2 circular pieces on the top , again both decorated in some form .
    Nuts Admiral 027.jpg
The trident has the metal rod running through with a small hole being required to fit into the top of the horsehair piece.
    Nuts Admiral 028.jpg

    Dragons

these are delicately sculpted , typical in design with aclearly visible teeh and mouth features on both , fit is simple by locating into shoulder recesses .
    Nuts Admiral 029.jpg
    Sword Handle/Tang

Excellent details of the handle design criss crossed all the way up , with good details on the top and lower edges , the tang itself is round in shape and fits well to the handle base , you could of course drill out the resin backing if you so wish ...guess whaI will do !!!
Nuts Admiral 030.jpg Nuts Admiral 031.jpg
    Base

A simple post type smooth and with no issues to fit ( pin it would be advisable )

    Final Thoughts

Personally its nice to see something from the history of Korea the parent country of Nuts Planet and one who is such a respected warrior as well . Similar has been released in the distant past now no longer available so this is a nice addition to the busts available , adding character and variaety to the Nuts Planet catalogue.

We all expect a high quality from Nuts Planet in all areas from the sculpting , casting to presentation ...have they managed it with this release ...most certainly YES

A nice addition to the display cabinet ...simple in painting packed with details and very distinctive.

A good choice for all to purchase

Didn't like this when it first came out a little while back mostly because of all those dots but now that I've seen this review that's actually accurate. Plus all the other decorations make this look like an interesting piece to paint. An excellent review and historical reference. Well done Nap.

I bought this several months ago. It is a real beauty. Wish I had a higher level of skill but it is coming along and I really like it. One of Nuts Planet's finest and that's saying a lot.
