In 'Advanced Figure Modelling' volume I you'll find an article by Diego Ruina painting Pegaso's 90 mm Ivan The Terrible. Contains some insight and helfpfull tips. Other then that the painting technique ues to paint these patterns seems to be the metier of Russian School painters.
