The Belgian Guides, with their flamboyantly colorful uniforms and immense colpacks (AKA busbys), are probably the best known of the Belgian cavalry. In the early years of the war, lots more wartime photos and illustrations were produced of Guides than any of the other types of cavalry. But just like all the Belgian cavalry, they gave up their much more visible pre-war uniforms, learned to wear khaki and cope with life in the trenches.

Many of these photos came from the late Roger De Boecke or Fernand Backaert.
