Beginning again, my coming back to hobby.

    I start off with three (shadow, midtone and highlight) to roughly map things out and then use the intermediate tones to soften the transitions. It will still look slightly rough if you only stick to the 5 values but it gets you started. You need to create more mixtures as you need them to fine tune things, for example an mix of your midtone and intermediate highlight will create something in between those two so that you can smooth the transition between them.

    Today's progress, blocking in values on the tunic... wanted to try underpainting.

    thanks for your explanation, this is me trying that layering style. I didnt finish the grayscale but i was falling asleep at the palette.

    Finished the gray scale today and added a purple glaze, not done but I think it's looking good.
