The idea of a badge at a show would be good as sometimes us as traders would like to know who is buying our product, it gives it that personal touch when you are talking them. just a my thoughts.

I usually sport my own name badge as it actually opens up conversations and you get to know more people. Also people like myself that sometimes doesnt remember names will not have to be embarressed.

@Tecumsea: General Sherman's middle name was Tecumseh, not Tecumsea.

I even don't like usernicks, so I use my real name at forums from the first day.
And I talk to most members here by their real names - if I know the name or he is written in the user profile.

In my german home forum we handle the problem "name or unsernick?" like that:

It's up to each member to registrate himself with usernick or real name. But we talk to each other by using our real names, for after five years most members do know the other ones personally.

So the real first name is edited by the admins in every signature of the members before each account is cleared- unless the member has already registered with his real first name.

I think this is a good and, above all, practical way to deal with the problem.

    Cheers

I always sign off with my name, as do most of us. I can't bring myself to put my own name under my chosen avatar.

I love the idea of avatars and forum names as it gives people a bit of individuality. Perhaps I'm being old fashioned but what does irritate me is when people don't sign their posts with their proper give name. l would never dream of signing a letter or email from Cinimod, like Mike said above most of us finish up with first names which is good.

Some of the other forums I'm a member of I am in a definite minority and it feels a bit odd starting to post to someone that you only know as Philbertankelbiterthethird (not real forum name). iMHO it just appears to be a very impersonal way to address someone, anyway, enough now. Overtired ...............Dom

Ps I just hope that no one starts a thread on shouting across the street to get someone's attention

Kieth I have never liked my Christian Name(Gordon) and only use it on documents and would be rather be called by my nickname chippy or chip . I think the avatars can be fun and show a small amount of personality .
