New to the world of Figurines and Vignettes....
I have just purchased a heap of AK and Vallejo paints and weathering products I also have a F.A.Q painting figures book given to me my a friend. I have everything I need in the way of Scratch building, Dioramas and Airbrushing as my background is armour and auto....just need a little guidance!

I have purchased a membership with Tommy's War and the Private,1st Bn Wellington Infantry Regiment, Chunuk Bair 1915....as I like the WWI British and Imperial Forces range

So have I purchased the right products in the way of AK Interactive for this range? I have purchased AK's as follows...
    • Acrylic Paint Set -WWI British Uniform Colour Set
    • Acrylic Paint Set - Flesh and Skin Colour Set
    • Figure Series - Leather and Buckles Paint Set
    • Acrylic Paint Set - Old & Weathered Wood Vol. Set
I have a heap of Vallejo Colours already....All I have just purchased are prime colours!

Am I on the right track...o_O Can anyone give me any additional colours I will need to achieve the correct British/Imperial Forces Uniform.

    Cheers for looking

Welcome to the forum Nos (y)

I don't use acrylics much but there are plenty of experienced acrylics painters on here who can give you helpful advice, I'm sure someone will chip in shortly.

FWIW it looks like you've got plenty of paint to get you going, too many choices for me but I like to keep things simple and tend to mix what I need from the primary colours and a few selected earth colours.

    This is planning ....:D

I begon with 8 Humbrol jars in the 70ies, 3 months later I added circa 10 tubes of oil colours . Today I have 12 Humbrol and arround 20 oils + some inks, pastels stick, felt pen

I'm not an acrylic guy, mainly I paint first Humbrol a tone clearer than the finished expected one, than use oils on top of it

But you have the tools now as for everybody " try, try, try and try again untill you're happy "

    Hi Nos and welcome :)

Sounds like you've got plenty of paints. I think there's a tendency to find the exact shade required ready made. Using a more limited pallet can help your figures look a bit more 'unified' so have a play with what you've got and see which colours you prefer - you'll soon find your favourites and the ones which look right to your own eye.

One 'trick' I've been playing with recently is having a neutral grey or blue for a figure and I add a tiny bit of it to each colour mix on the figure - seems to make it hang together better.

Whatever way you go have fun - colour is so subjective a subject that you'll find some love what you do whilst others are less happy so try not to get hung up on anyone else's opinion (Except mine obviously!)

When you start throwing paint about stick some pictures up and plenty will chip in with suggestions

Short answer - yes. You've got everything you could possibly need to build and paint these figures.

My best advice is to keep your paint diluted with water. It's always better to add a couple of extra coats to a figure if required, than slap the paint on too thickly and cover up the surface detail.

Acrylics are designed to be thinned with water and require patience to get good results. Trust the paint to do its job and concentrate on developing your painting techniques. There's no right or wrong technique, just whatever you like.

    Hi there ,

There is a tendency well by me anyway to get lots of paints I have far too many but seem to use the same ! , my suggestion is work with what you have and develop with every figure .

As you are gong for a TW figure , a great choice ....so just enjoy yourself and as the other guys have said kerp the paint diluted , you might want to add a retarder as well ( I use Winsor and newtons ) , I also use a wet pallete .

Just enjoy the process and learn with every figure ...I do!

You guys have been awesome with all your help I have been a member of many fourms but this one tops it! So helpful and I haven't even recieved my goods yet!

It is good that people are willing to share their secrets or techniques!

i went with the AK acrylics as they had a good range of paint sets and obviously a good thing for a beginner for me as there are a million and one shade colours and tones when it comes to figurine painting, were is my backgrounf is Auto and Armour....one colour...a filter...and a heap of weathering!

I hope that I can grow into other mediums like oils and inks.....once I have taken the training wheels off...

Nap: Tell me more about this retarder is it compatable with the AK acrylic?

Drying retarders should be fine with the ak acrylics mate.

Hey Nos. your starter kit is a well reasoned and comprehensive set.

You will find that you don't use all the paints after a whilet but there will be a core of tones you will mix and re-use over and again.

I think the only thing missing is about 100 kits thst you just HAD to buy still in boxes and waiting to one day see a paintbrush.

But hey don't worry, it will happen, and you have to start somewhere :D

    Welcome to the Planet!

I can only second the advice, as Billy/eludia and Viking Bob have given, to get started painting. You've got a pretty good arsenal there, but there are almost as many answers to the question of which paints to use, as there are painters. As far as AK's selection goes, Andrea and Vallejo have catalogs that are comparably extensive. Tamiya's acrylics are good and varied, too, and there are some folks who even use craft store acrylics. I've got some of each of those, mostly because I don't mix colors to get another color all too often, I prefer to work with off-the-shelf colors, but again, that's just my preference.

In any case, get painting, and have fun! I look forward to seeing your work.

    Prost!
