I want to start a new project soon, but need some advice regarding painting cold faces, that is to say a figure who is standing in the cold in Russia, now have trawled through my books but can't find anything.
If anybody has any ideas, I would be grateful.

Use a little bit of purple around the cheeks, ears, nose and lips.
After dry, stipple some blue in.
This should be done after the skin is normally painted.

Maybe keep the face pale and add some pink to the nose.. Avoid warm tones like orange.

Shade with Purple Madder and as Ed says, a touch of red (very sparingly) on the nose and cheeks will work wonders...

Remember that human biology and physiology has several typical responses to extreme cold.

Firstly, blood flow is restricted to the extremities in order to preserve core body temperature and protect the vital organs of the brain, lungs and heart.

This means fingers and hands will turn a slightly blue-ish colour as they a denied oxygenated blood by the body's own defences.

Parts of the face will turn a pale shade of blue, especially the nose, lips and ears.

As Marc suggested, a wash of purple over pale skin should create a very realistic skin tone for a very cold person.

Please bear in mind I live in Perth Western Australia where the current temperature is 36 degrees Celsius, so I am not speaking from personal experience.

Thanks for the insight Tony, its only between 1 and 5 degrees Celsius going down to -2 overnight here, maybe a look in the mirror might help
