    Greetings.
Although I have a bit to go with the Lancer I thought I would get a head start with some colour help with this one.

    Details
    Micks Mick's Officer 8th ( Kings Royal Irish ) Hussar. 1891.
'V' Bust The original Sculpt was by Offo.
Re worked into a V Bust by Tommie Worton.
    Available from Ellies Miniatures.

The Officer is seen wearing a undress Patrol Jacket.
The last part of the 19th century saw the art of military tailoring at its zenith. A prime example of that art was the undress patrol jacket worn by cavalry regiments. Heavily braided with black mohair lace on the chest and edged all round with black Astrakhan fur, Every regiment had its own (and in some cases unique) pattern of jacket. These were all illustrated in the 1900 regulations.

This being an example of the jacket worn by thius regiment. Note the black mohair Busby lines worn around the front of the 8th Hussars patrol jacket. A unique feature peculiar to this regiment. ONLY

    Painting Help

This is well outside my comfort zone with the Blue material black mohair lace on the chest and edged all round with black Astrakhan fur, and black cord work.

I will be painting with acrylics.

I thought I would go along the following lines but if I am wrong or you have a better idea please chip in

    Jacket
Dark Prussian Blue with Black for the shadows and Prussian Blue for the Highlights.

    Astrakhan Fur
Base Black Brown, Dry brush Black, Dark Blue wash and pick out a few bits with a dark Black /Gray.

    Mohair Lace
Slate Gray, with a Dark Blue wash with a little Black dry brush, picking out a few gray threads here and there.

    The Cords
    Straight black.

Any thoughts on the above would be appreciated

    Thanks for looking.

    Hi Mick

I like the colours you are looking at for the painting , I would try not to push the highs too much though .....the focus is on the lacing .

I see there are rank badges in the picture ..are they on the bust .be a nice contrast between them and the uniform

You enjoy the sea lapping between your toes I am off to Bugle Call today ..looking forward to that .

    Happy painting and sangria

    Greetings,
    Small update:-

Side Cap done, I have blocked in the skin base colour along with the Dark Gray hair as I thought that he being a Captain he would have been in a few years, and could carry the Gray / White hair off, I also thought it would bring a little more colour as the jacket will be all Blue / Black.

    Thoughts and comments welcome.

    Small update.
More work carried out on the face and hair, close to calling that a day.
Base coat of London Grey applied to the lace work, will let that dry off and apply washes darkening the grey in stages finishing up with a black /grey.
Then see how we go from there.

    Greetings,
    Small up date :-
I have base coated the lace with London Grey and with washes brought it up to its present position by adding darker greys then another wash of the Base / Dark Prussian Blue.
which is where we are at now. Still need to bring out some definition to the loops and buttons, and more work needs to be done on the rear lace and Cap line cords.

I have applied a single coat of Prussian Blue to the tunic to give me some sort of reference.

    Question:-
    a) Have I I gone dark enough for the Lace?
    b) Should I stick to the Prussian Blue for the tunic so as not to make the bust to dark or go with a Dark Prussian Blue

Four pics taken in straight daylight without overhead lighting as above just to see if the lace looks darker.

    Hi El Mick

Looking good mate , like the lacework , black is difficult to get right , I woukd probably define the edges with lights but it's a bit of a personal thing .

And you have a dark blue uniform as well ...again a hard colour to get right but it's getting there

Keep at it ...back off the Sangria a little ...lol

    Thanks Kev,
95% happy with the lace, I have to say it looks a lot better in real life, I hope when I add a bit of definition to the buttons and the edges as you say it will make it a whole lot better.
Its not the Sangria its the sodding Brandy that killing me:hungover:
