View Full Version : Suggestion about vBench posts

I wasn't sure whether this should be posted in vBench section or General.
When an artist posts a new vBench entry, it's always a bit unclear to me whether the artists wants a full, honest critique and comments or not. I don't want to critique someone's work unless they want that. Obviously there's also the risk of offending someone if the critique is unwanted.
So - I propose a solution that seems to be working over on Timelines. Frankly I have no idea how much extra work this entails for Gordy and the PF administrators, so you guys will have to tell me whether this will work on PF or not. And if it won't, no problem! :)
Divide all vBench entries into three categories to be chosen by the poster. The poster would be required to make a choice.
1. Finished works - comments but no critique requested.
2. Works in progress - comments but no critique requested.
3. Works in progress - comments and full, honest constructive critique requested.
I think this has a lot of advantages for everyone, but that's just my opinion.
All the best,
Dan

Dan, I TRY to stick to commenting only when the poster says so in his/her post. I have however commented when a critique was not asked for. I make an effort to NOT do this as it can be a bit annoying I'm sure.
While Dan's idea has merit, personally I like to keep a site as simple as possible without having too many catagories/ sub-catagories.~Gary

Gary - I like simplicity also, but, in this case, we could eliminate most (no - not all) of the possibility for bruised feelings (and egos) and both self-regulate and (possibly) improve the quality of artistic critique. I'm not intending to argue here - just upholding my POV.
All the best,

I just added a poll above to allow the members to express an opinion quickly.

We have Rule #16 addresses the issue where people can request critiques on the outset of their topic:

Nevertheless, unfortunately we have no control of direct criticism via forged email or PM to a poster (it has happened in the past)

I have noticed in postings that if someone wants a critique, they usually ask for one.

Good idea Dan, however if the forum staff or indeed the majority want to keep the format as it is maybe a sticky message saying all posting are subject to comment and\or critique iaw Rule#16 unless it is specifically stated no comment required.

Hola,
This has been discussed in this thread too, where some thoughts have been shared already.
http://www.planetfigure.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22999
I have voted for leaving things as they are. In fact, the general rules of the forum already address the matter, and courtesy and good manners should account for the rest.
If someone really wants to preclude the possibility of anyone else making comments (any kind of comments) then he could just put photos in the gallery.
Regards,
Dani

Just put photos in the gallery....
IŽd love to, if I could.
Can one do that?
If so, how?

Spike - I don't see anything about posting photos in a gallery in the FAQs. I suggest sending a PM to one of the moderators asking about that.
All the best,
Dan
Planetfigure no longer has Moderators. Just one over-worked staff, Roc, who has no Moderator controls. Contact gordy@planetfigure.com about how to set up a gallery.

Hi Roc,
I understand that you moderate this site- You do a terrific job. Thanks.
I note that for the above two threads, they invite little critique and negative comments. Perhaps its a question of politeness, similar to kit reviews when the obligatory review is always done in a very complimentary manner.
I have to admit that most of the kits being reviewed are generally of a very high quality so perhaps, my point here is canvass what the other planeteers think.
